I have a grandaughter that attends Exeter Academy in NH. She suggested her and I take a road trip on the return to school this fall instead of flying back. A little one on one time with grandpa which I'm looking foward to.I also noticed that many of the forum members are from the east coast area. So I'm looking for ideas of what to do and see on the way up there and on the return trip by myself. She needs to be back to school on the the thursday after labor day. For her I would like to visit some type of historical site or event and a car related event for myself on the return trip. Any ideas would be helpful .

Thanks Ron. I see they have a race on the 11TH. I like open wheel cars but LOVE dirt tracks. That would take care of Saturday. Keep the ideas coming !

Boy do I feel stupid. Ron I thought you were talking about the 1/8 clay oval in NY and then I remember Limerock Park. Remember I'm an old redneck from Indiana. LOL

well we will be at Lime Rock for 5 days during the labor day weekend ...

if you want to see dirt track, look up Middletown, NY specifically the fairgrounds .. i believe they still do Sat night dirt racing

Don't see why I can't do a day at Lime Rock and an evening of open wheel dirt racing. :thanks

I would swing by NYC and hit the South Street seaport. There is a great exhibit called Bodies. It have everything from Mumification, to how the heart works, muscles and everything about the human body. Take 1/2 a day to get through the whole thing. I have a 15 year old boy and a 12 year old. Their granparents took them and they has such a great time they still talk about it months later. If you feel like taking in a show, we just saw Rock of Ages and its great becasue the music jump generations ans both my kids and wife and I loved it. With misic thats tough-thank God for Gituar hero and Glee! Then get tix to a Yankee or met game. The New Yankee Stadium is SICK-Go to the game 2 hours early and you can walk through monument part (it closes 1 hr prior to game time). There are serious restaurants in the part and the game is sure to please. City Field is also a new Stadium although since i am a Yankee fan, it just dosent feel the same to me. Could hit baseball Hall of Fame on the way to NY, its in Cooperstown. (Small Detour)

I went to school in Boston and love that city. I have taken the family there and Boston has so much to offer. On the way to Boston you have the Basketball Hall of fame, in Boston Fenway Park, Aquarium, Fanuel Hall, Duck Tour, Science Museam-Aviation Section is awesome-Wright Bros Through Space Shuttle.

I have two biys so most of our activites are geared to their interests, i hope you can use some of the above. In any case have a fun, safe trip and enjoy your grandaughter undivided attention. The fact that she wants you to drive her spreaks volumes about you and Her!

Thanks for the info. The Bodies Exhibit deal sounds like her kind of thing. We will check it out. My son (her dad) takes her to a lot of stick and ball events and has covered most of those bases. He is the jock in the family and I'm the gearhead. LOL

Is this the track that you can see from the pike on the south side as headed west ? I use to travel the pike headed home from the east coast in my tractor trailer and would see a little bull ring that was packed on weekends.

Williams Grove Speedway is about 6 miles from the turnpike so it's deffinately not the same track. WGS is a favorite to the "World of Outlaws" and the "PA Posse" and can be seen on some of the Nintendo Open Wheel racing games. It is a 1/2 mile track.

There's a ton of stuff if you have the luxury of time to stay off the Interstates. I meet more interesting charactors in small towns and diners when I'm on bike trips.

If you're going to hit Lime Rock for weekend races consider Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome also, an hour or so west of there. Only chance you may ever get to see a Spad chasing a Fokker Triplane around the sky.

Cross the Hudson at Kingston and drive through the Catskills.

If you come across southern NY either coming or going the Glenn Curtiss Museum at Hammondsport is interesting and unique. If you have to do an Interstate I-87/NY17 across southern NY has less traffic and trucks than the I-90 toll road. I-88 up towards Albany is scenic and if you're a baseball fan it goes right by Cooperstown.

Take any road through the Finger Lakes region and you'll be rewarded with great scenery and wineries all over the place.

Although the foliage won't be prime yet VT & NH 9 across those States is a pleasureable & scenic drive.

The Zippo museum in Bradford, PA is way-cool!

Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is worth seeing.

Thanks so far for all of the tips. I knew this was the right place to obtain the best info. The grandaughter will look up the all the places that intrest her on the net for the trip there and I'll plan the return trip. TL has the right idea about staying off the interstate as much as possible. Love traveling the back roads when I was into M/C touring . Had my own shop for a couple of years. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks to all of the members for their suggestions and ideas. Our trip was great even though the 6.0 ford diesel started to act up half way through the trip. Went to Hershey park and the grandaughter liked the making of her own personalized candy bar. Spent the next day at the Bodies exhibit and traveling out to Ellis and Freedom Island , Battery Park. Went to ground zero and chinatown.Next day was on to NH and an additional day viewing her school campus. After dropping her safely off at school I went down to Providence RI.,to hook up with an old neighbor for dinner and a little bar hopping.Next day was spent seeing Times Square and scooping up trinkets for the people back home.Spent Saturday evening in MiddleTown NJ attending a Kenny Vance concert. Kenny at one time played with Jay and the Americans and now has his own doowop group called the Planitones. Maybe next time I will make a few automotive events but had a great time with the grandaughter that she might remember long after I'm gone.
