I am trying to get my car done for this weekend for a car meet. It is a 2001 black Civic. I made the mistake of going through a car wash when I first got it about a year ago and I have had scratches and swirl marks ever since. I am using a Porter Cable randome orbital 6 speed polisher and Griot's Garage polish and wax. So far I have one coat of #2 polish and two coats of #3 polisha nd I still see alot of marks. I did get a lot out but still some left. Should I do a third coat of polish or just give up on it? Also for you that have used this polisher....what speed do you use? Thanks in advance for any help or tips you can give me.

What if I do a couple of coats of griot's # 2 then finish with a couple coats of #3? I bought all Griot's and that is why I want to use the stuff I got. Thanks!

2001civicex,

I also have a black car. I would try using either CMA's cutting pad or maybee a Meguiar's cutting pad with Meguiar's Dual Action Cleaner Polish. It is more abbraisive than the Griot's #2 and is buffered so the polishing particles break down quickly.

After the DACP, use your Griot's polishing pad with the mild Griot's polish.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

My Black 7 Series

So it is cool to use something more aggressive on the new car? I was just affraid of scratching it more. I am sort of new to this and using the PC polisher so I just want to be safe and sure. Thanks again fellas. :xyxthumbs

Always use the least aggresive product possible before going to a more aggresive one. If you use a product like 3M SMR or DACP with your PC and work it properly you shouldn't add any swirls to the paint. Just be sure to work the product until it's almost gone.

I think my problem is I am not polishing it long enough. So I should polish it until it is dry or until the polish begins to dust off? Also, I was just going back and forth with the PC, I guess i should of doen the back and forth along with a zig zag pattern.

The 3M, DACP and the Griot's all have diminishing abrasives, Meaning the longer you work them the less agressive they get. If your not working the polish long enough you might be seeing the marks your adding.

If your using a PC it shouldn't really matter if you go back and forth or in a zig zag.

Do I work it into the paint until the polish is completly gone or just dry?

As I understand it, work the product for a long while until it starting to dry, not dry (which would be bad). If you're doing this in the sun or it's too warm or something and it's drying out too fast re-wet with QD.
