Scratch and swirl remover

I have some perfect-it II rubbing compound (fine cut) lying around and was wondering if it would be suitable for removing scratches and swirls on my car. On the back of the bottle it states it can remove 1200 grit or finer scratches, oxidation, and coarse swirl marks.

thanks!

Yup. In fact, that's what I use on my cars to remove swirls. Its not as tough as 3M SMR, but for light colored cars it works really well. I've got some SMR for light vehicles on its way so we'll see how it compares. I really like PI-II though. :up :up

I drive a World Rally Blue Wrx, so is it a good idea to use this stuff?

Also should I apply by hand or by an orbital with a white pad?

Is this not the same product that's also known as FCRC? If so, isn't FCRC stronger than SMR? :nixweiss

Its possible to use it by hand, but the results will be much better with an orbital. Anytime you are talking about doing swirl removal you should probably turn to your orbital. They are much more effective.

Depending on the swirls that you have I would say this is a good way to start. I normally start with #9 and then graduate up to PI-II and then SMR. If your swirls are mild to moderate then PI-II is a good choice. No sense in cutting down any more of the clear than neccessary.

so how much product should i put on the pad and at what speed should I use it at? Do I buff it in with the orbital till the product disappears then wipe clean with a mf?

thanks!

Is 3M ZMR the same as Z5?

If not what is the difference? I just got a PC and havn't used it yet.

Old paint job. but it still shines.

Its actually "3M SMR" That stands for Swirl Mark Remover. Its not affiliated or similar to any Zaino product in any way. This is for heavy duty swirls on your car and is recommended to be applied with a machine. You can apply Z by hand and get great results without losing the use of your arms for the next week.

This all very informative.....am about to order some Z5....have used all of Sal's other products and couldnt be any happier......minor swirls just starting , even tho I am using a Pinnacle Mit.....am using "good Towels" ....any other suggestions on avoiding these swirls....

"He Who Dares Wins"....S.A.S.

If you are expecting Z5 to remove or fill swirls you'll be disappointed. I've been using it and other than the most minute teeny-tiny swirls, it won't do the job. Just my experiences.

Best to use a real SMR to remove them. Follow up with Z5 or Z2 or whatever.
