schools

I started by taking entrepreneur small business courses at Rutgers University in Camden, N.J., and followed that up with advertising and marketing seminars at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Professional detailers need to concentrate on business principles even more than they concentrate on detailing principles. They would be smart to spend 80 percent of their educational effort focused on learning more about what it takes to own and operate a successful and profitable business. While the other 20 percent should be learning more about the actual process of detailing.

I agree completely with Frank.

A substantial grasp of business principles is very important. You'll want to be a better manager than detailer. Oh, you'll want to excell at both, but you must manage and develop the business and brand.

I started late, this is my third enterprise. The previous were on a much larger scale. I brought some maturity and experience to the project, and only then did I seek out specfic products and techniques. (BIG thanks to Autopians and David B for access to SO much information).

Now, four years later, I'm a pretty good Detailer, but I'm still a better Manager... I have an excellent opportunity to open a new shop in a VERY upscale office complex - this project will require, first and foremost, management, and that will insure proper detailing.

Good Luck!

You need to know a lot about marketing , sales and business planing to be successful. Nothing derogatory but you will notice a lot of experience detailers that are inexperienced at business operating from the trunk of a car or home garage. All of a sudden they wake up years later still working out of a garage or the trunk of a car. To each his own, that’s why business skills are needed!!!

Agreed, interesting concepts do come from the masses on the forums. The trick is having the knowledge to discern good form bad. I myself have found very valuable information!!! The trick is to edit twice before posting so not to get BANNED. LOL...................

Ditto! I was a restaurant manager for years so I had a really good grasp on how to run a business. Doesn't matter how good a detailer you are if you can't manage the business end of detailing.

Salesmanship if you can sell a frig to an Eskimo then that is a part of something big.
