First, I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of this guy, but I was slightly in shock and didn't think of it, until he was finished. I'll catch him next time for sure!

My wife and I go to car shows every weekend.

There's a guy parked right next to me with a White '65 Corvette Coupe, 396/425hp... A gorgeous car with a fairly fresh (past 2 years or so) paint job.

He gets out a Bottle of Windex and a Roll of Paper Towels! Yep, you guessed it.

He did the WHOLE CAR with the paper towels and Windex.:out::out::out:

I couldn't resist asking him if he always cleaned his car like that... he replied in the simplest of terms... "Yep."

Enough to make a grown man cry.

I gave him one of my cards.:)

Windex to clean the whole car!!!! :cursing: I probably would have hit him :D

Good thing you were there for the rescue

Bill I'd be shocked had I not seen a guy pour Aquafina on this car at a show and dry it with a big bath/beach towel... at least he used only a little water and went section by section... :cursing:

When I was growing up, my mother used Windex and paper towels on her car. She was convinced that it made the paint shine. Of course, the paintwork on her Buick was diminished to a primer-looking finish within 4 years, but that didn't stop her from continuing to use Windex as a makeshift ONR. :cursing:

Wow Bill, that is crazy. In highschool I worked at a body/detail shop, and we used to use an off brand Windex on everything, interior, paint, rims, whatever. It was 'how we rolled'.

The only time we didn't use glass cleaner was after 'compound n' glazing' cause we didn't want the swirls to show back up ;

3M Fill N' Glaze topped with Kiwi Carnauba :D

I know a guy who washes his cars with paint thinner. Says it brings back the shine and you don't have to wax. I just looked at him and shook my head, what could I say, you can't fix "stupid".

Bill....

Don't feel bad. I can't tell you how many times I have seen the same thing at cars shows. Windex, paper towels, dirty rags for wipedowns, etc. I cracks me up how people have total disregard for their cars. I remember one show where the guy brought off his supplies in a 40 gallon Hefty bag and dumped them all over the ground lol...

I took my 67 Nova to a car show last weekend and won "Best Paint"... People were asking me about the "special towels" I was using to wipe the car down with lmao :D

I have witnessed this exact same thing at a car show. :scared: At first glance, he was doing the windows and mirrors when I joked to a friend that 'he probably uses it for the whole truck' and shortly thereafter is when I witnessed him using the windex and a bath towel on the paint. At least he didn't set the towel on the ground, though. He placed it on top of the tires while he was spraying the windex. :D

Just a few weeks ago, there was a guy wiping off a thick layer of dust with a paper towel......dry. No detail spray, windex, or anything. :out: What a shame to see a new Challenger SRT getting destroyed by a paper towel. It made me kind of queazy.

Pics of the Nova? I LOVE that year body style and would love to restore one some day...they are just too pricey though.

Nice Nova. I went to the Art of the Car Concours here in Kansas City last saturday, and it was amazing to see that some of the very high-end cars in the show had second-rate care. Polish/wax residue, dirty interiors, things that you just would not expect. Some even looked like Windex Specials. :(Most of the real show-only, come on the trailer type cars were perfect. It was an invitation only show, but some of the invitees need to study detailing techniques a little. :D

My buddies friends were using his 1969 Baracuda for the day. They were thankful for the use of the car and wanted to surprise him, so they decided to wash the car.

When I pulled up to the house with my buddy we saw his two friends washing his Baracuda with a bucket of Dish soap and Brillo Pads :out:

The car had a Navy Blue non clear coat, paint job that was less than a year old.

You should have seen the look on my buddies face. Every inch of the paint was swirled and scratched beyond reason. :w00t:

The two brainiacs had no idea they were doing something wrong.

Good thing it was only a $2000 beater but it was my buddies pride and joy and a nice looking car to boot.

I believe that many people just don't even see the swirls!

I've pointed out SEVERE SWIRLS to people and asked them, "If you look at the reflection of the direct sunlight on your car, can you see the fine scratches in a circular pattern?"

And they've replied, "Not really."

"You can't see that?

"See what?"

Yep, the same reason they don't notice that their headlights don't work, taillights out or a flat tire..................

My wife insist on using dish soap to wash her car that i just spent countless hours compounding, polishing and using Blackfire wet diamond paint sealant on! She does not seem to believe me that using dish soap is bad for the finish. Could someone please explain to her why this is a BAD IDEA!!!
