Ryobi RS280VS Orbital

I wanted to get people opinions on this sander.

I asked for a ROS for Christmas from my parents in law with specific requirements. In fact, I mentioned to either get the PC from Lowes, or the Dewalt DW443. My my father in law who knows a lot about woodworking tools recomended a Ryobi because it would be better for my hands after extended use. So I looked up Ryobi's models and found a variable speed one and thought it would be good. Low and belond, that is what I opened on Christmas Day, Ryobi RS280VS . According to the web page, 0-13000 OPM is what it is, but I think the spec sheet included said 7000-13000 OPM. 2.8A current draw seems like enough.

I don't have the receipt or know where he got it. I would feel bad taking it back and my FIL catching me without it when he visits some time. I have no use in the next few years for using it on wood, only cars. I only intend to use the sander/polisher for removing swirls as I will wax by hand. One vehicle is in great shape and will only require light polsihing with #9 2.0 I suspect (2002 dark gray car), one will need moderate polishing with something like Meguairs DACP (1999 dark blue pickup), and the last will probalby need more help, but at least it is little (1985 black, no clearcoat, but repainted about 4-6 years ago).

I plan to purchase some of the organge pads from CMA when they become availible as I believe it should be everything I need it to.

So, does anyone think this ROS would be be good for detailing?

Thanks for the help,

Aaron

13,000 OPM is way to fast for detailing. The DeWalt only goes up to about 6,800 max, even that is a little fast for an orbital.

If the slowest speed setting on the Ryobi is 7,000 OPM I would not be using it for detailing. It's just simply too fast. When it comes to polishing faster is not better, slow speeds are critical to "working" the polish correctly.

There is a Ryobi RS280 and a Ryobi RS280VS. If you have the Ryobi RS280:

It is a great machine for car work. It ranges is 0-13,000 orbits per minute (obviously you use the lower speeds). I have used an earlier version for over 2 years - best detailing sander you can get in my view. Sadly the RS280 was not brought to Australia.

If you have the Ryobi RS280VS it is not suitable for detailing:

The VS model looks like it'd be harder to handle too, as you will need to have a reasonably good grip on the thing as it's dancing around...
