Rubbing compound that is spread on by hand

I was watching an episode of How It's Made when they showed the assembly of the Weismann MF5. They talked about using rubbing compound to get the finish looking perfect and they showed the rubbing compound being spread on my hand rather geavily like cream cheese before being buffed off with a rotary. I never saw a rubbing compound spread on by hand like that before. Does anyone know what kind of rubbing compound that might be? I'm thinking maybe Farecla? Anyone know for sure? Thanks

I saw that show too, then I googled the car's price - eh, not in the budget just yet! But that was a lot of polish they spread on that hood, and it went right away with no observable sling...
