Rotary w/ Optimum Compound

was doing some research and holograms are made from "dry buffing" which means not enough product on pad on paint.



so in fact, i may have been using TOO Little product..



thanks for the tip, i'll re-address the issue come weeks end when i fire up my rotary test lab again :D
 
As Chuck said! You will see how Optimum spreads and keeps a consistent buffing film. Yes, there is a danger of dry buffing but OCC & OCP are designed to stay wet for an extremely long time. If you use too much it will be white and won't go translucent easily. Then you can only figure how it goes on under the buffing film because you won't see it. This way the too much product is hard to remove until a certain point of working time. When you use the right amount, and you've developed the right feel for it, the product is less, the buffing film is thinner and you can see through better and it is always easy to remove. The right amount won't cake up; it will work reliably. Ah, and you need very little pressure...

Swirls or halograms are micro scratches and "dry buffing" is one way they are introduced into the paint. They are caused more from the use of an aggressive pad and product combo and then not finishing the buffing job out properly.

Yep! For me OCC finishes up always LSP-ready with an orange pad but as I mentioned I work with a PC (although a high speed, 26.000 OPM one).



Try different speeds and pads and if you can, make pics of each configuration/state. And... always spend a LOT of time on a panel - because with Optimum you CAN!

Rotary with Optimum Compound and Optimum Polish



Needed more product:

I was NOT using enough product. Added more Opt. Compound to my pad, 2 thicker circles as discussed in another thread and voila ! Unfortunately, it had a lot more sling like DACP, but worth it in the end. Nothing good old painter's drapes won't solve in the future.



Needed more Speed:

Furthermore, i found that by kicking up the speed from 1200, to 1400rpm was WAAAaaaaaaaaaaay more effective as well.. really broke the Optimum down a helluva lot better. I can't tell the day and night result from 1000 to 1400 can do.. Within minutes.. poof ! alcohol/h20 wipe, and swirls/scratches gone !



Overall:



I am sticking to DACP over Optimum. why ?



DACP uses less product,

spreads and works in better

gives a polish without adding a second bottle to the mix
