Rotary 1st Time

Well, I was anxious and wanted to test out my new rotary. (Chicago Electric from Harbor Freight) I have; No say I had some swirls I needed to get rid of and this was the time to use it. I used 3M SMR for Dark Colors followed by WG Pre-cleaner by hand and Sealant by hand. Looks great. My buddy came over and noticed the hood right off the bat after just using the 3M SMR and nothing else. Here is how I did it:

1.Rotary Slow!!!!

2. Used Detail Mist to “wet the pad because I heard a dry pad is dangerous

3. Made my X shape on the pad with the 3M

4. Only let the machine weight be used and actually I lifted evenly off a little to remove a few ounces for safety.

5. Worked small 2 foot areas only and stopped the rotary once it began removing some of the stuff and used a MF for the rest.

6. Pre-Cleaned with WG

7. Sealed with WG

8. May top with #26 not sure

What I noticed. SLING SLING SLING all over…It is a powerful tool and should be used with caution. I did try to remove the swirls by hand with the 3M SMR and even 1Z products and never really removed them until the rotary.

I now need backing plate and pad recomendations..I am looking for non aggressive to appy 1 z paint polish and 3M SMR and #26

To help reduce sling, I kinda rub the pad in the area I'm going to be working. Just remember to slightly lift the edge of the pad when you're picking up the product or you'll still get sling.

Mr. Clean 2K- Glad to hear your rotary experience is starting out well. I got the three "flex" pads from CMA. I do most of my rotary work with the standard 6-6.5" pads like I use on the PC.

For rotary use with 1Z PP, I usually use the white Lake polishing pads. Start with a low speed (no more than 800) so you don't break down the 1Z abrasives too fast, then speed it up.

Oh, and I dunno if I'd bother using the rotary to apply #26. No real advantage over the PC and there's that sling issue to contend with.
