Road Tar

I just washed my car today and noticed that road tar near the front wheels are getting harder to get off. I had to 'wipe' it with my wash mitt several times when normally its just a couple passes for them to come off. Is it necessary to clay the car or should I just use a QD to get rid of them? the car still feels smooth though:confused:

Another option is to use Stoner's Tarminator. It makes quick work of the tar. Since Tarminator strips wax, I usually rewax the portion of the surface I used Tarminator on.

Thanks for the replies. I've never seen anyone here carry any Stoner's products. As for citrus based cleaner, no haven't tried that either. I use P21S shampoo and maybe its just me but it seems very mild compared to say, Meguiars gold class. Anyone find this? Good product though (expensive too)

genX,

None of the local retailers around me carry Stoner's, so I've been ordering it online from CMA. For the record, Stoner's does have a website where you can order their products directly.

I'm a big fan of the P21S shampoo. I don't think it is meant to do heavy battle against tar, but for day-to-day road grime it works well. One of the reasons I like the P21S shampoo so much is that it does not seem to affect my wax coat as much as other shampoos I've tried.

You're right. P21S is very mild. Great stuff. It won't strip off the wax like many overly-strong shampoos can.

That's the trouble sometimes with a shampoo that advertises it will clean grime out of every crevice and make your car look like new. Sure, it looks different because it stripped everything off your car alright, but that unfortunately included a few layers of wax!

Your right Brad.

I am also looking for a VERY mild soap. When I clean my car it is just because I need to detail it again, not because it's dirty.

I am thinking:

Zaino shampoo

PS12

Meg Gold Class (seems strong)

Do you guys know of anything else or recommend any of the above listed soaps as a very very mild shampoo?

P21S is the mildest of the three. Zaino and Meguiars are both fairly strong I have not compared them. I have only used Zaino on Zaino finishes.

I LOVE Zaino shampoo, it's my favorite, but I only use it on my Z2 finish, which of course, is much more durable than a carnuba finish.

Thanks Brad. So P21S it is from now on. I feel my detailing becomes too frequent because I like to wash my car often (once a week) and it eats away at my protection too much. This usally leads me to apply more sealent every weekend because I want the car to re-gain the shine it just lost from the previous wash. It's a vicious cycle I tell you. ;) So by Sunday night I ask myself what I did for the weekend and it's usally something like, wash rims/tires friday night, wash and re-apply sealent Saturday and detail interior Sunday. Every weekend I am out there because of that darn soap! :D

Keep in mind, I don't use shampoo every time I wash. Since my car is garaged and fairly clean, I use shampoo usually every two to three washes. Most people over shampoo.

Winter time is when I will use shampoo just about every wash because the car gets dirtier, faster and the shampoo helps lubricate the grit away and helps avoid scratching.

Talk about taking it easy on your clear. You redefine that entire "use the least abrasive method as possible" saying.

Your cars up close must look really nice. Have you ever looked at your paint through a magnifying glass, microscope or something that would really magnify everything to really see what your clear coat looks like?

Yes, I have a 4x, 8x and 10x lupes. The metallic paints of the S4 and Carrera look like shards of silver ice poking up at you. The red of my BMW is fairly flat. The non clearcoated, creme paint on the Jag looks like white glass.

If you don't mind the low amount of suds, One Grand Wash & Wax is also a very mild shampoo and is supposed to have some wax/carnauba in it. It works really well on a carnauba'd finish and it's available locally for me!

Now if they'd only restock their darn T-shirts....!!
