Rise of the Machines - PC Questions

Question:

I'm going to get the PC soon and from all I have read its almost impossible to do serious damage with one. I would like to practice with it first though. Can I just go to a junk yard and buy an old door or hood for $10 and then have at it?

How have some of you gotten your start with a machine?

Sorry, had to reference the Governator in the title! :usa

New Owner,

There is a place ove near me that would probably be able to give you a scrap hood or fender. If you come to the meet on the 2nd, I can see if I can wrangle something up for you by then.

Sure, you can get a junk panel to practice on (I don't know if you'll get one for $10), but I don't think it's really necessary. As long as you are using a polishing pad and even moderately aggressive polish (#83, SSR2.5), it's really impossible to damage paint (you might scuff or stain certain types of trim, however). You shouldn't be able to damage paint with much short of an agressive 4" pad and/or something like SSR3 (rocks in a bottle).

The local body shop usually gives them to me for no charge. Hope you can meake it...We have some great products to try.

Setec,

Thanks for the info. I'll probably end up getting a starter kit of sorts. I've called every Lowe's within one-days drive and I either get a "huh?" or a "we haven't had those since the first day we dropped the price". There might still be one left in Timbukto.

As mentioned earlier I really don't think its necessary that you'll need to practice on an old junk scaps...now if you were talking rotary that would be a different story. I used my PC for the first time this past weekend and all went well. Just do plenty of reading on this form on what pads/polishes and how to use PC and you should be fine.

GOOD LUCK

I agree with you that it might not be necessary, but if scrap is available, it certainly would not hurt.

The only way I've ever done damage (on remotely healthy b/c paint) was with 4" pads and an aggressive mindset. I wouldn't bother with the spare panels either...they could be a PIA to have around/get rid of. IMO the practice time would be better spent on your vehicle; I always expect people to find the PC is *much* less aggressive than they expected, and usually less aggressive than they'd *like*.

I totally agree with Accumulator...the PC has a slight learning curve and is very easy to use.

Click on my sig to see it in action and how easy it is to use

Good luck!
