New to this subject and to this board.. Had a friend turn me on to the "california duster", soft dusting unit that is supposed to be treated with something to help pick up the dust. Used it a bit on my old car with bad paint but now have a new 2001 unit and need help. Question.. are these safe to the finishes, and are they recommended by any out there?

I use the Calif. Car Duster! It's coated with pariffin wax and it doesn't picks up dust without scratching the paint. Make sure to wrap it in newspaper for a few days as per directions, or the wax may streak.

I like to use their dash duster on wheels, too!

I have used the Cal Car Duster for a long time. They are great. They dont scratch the paint at all. BW is right, wrap the duster in newspaper for 2 days. The paper will absorb the extra wax so that it does not streak on the car. Dont be afraid to use it, it wont hurt your new car at all. I have seen them being used on brand new Rolls-Royce's that cost over $300K.

One tip is to never store your CA Duster in your trunk during hot weather and then use it before cooling off. The parafin melts and will streak like crazy. I try to keep mine in a somewhat controled environment and only use it in the morning or late evening during the summer.

Use VERY LIGHT pressure to avoid scratches. If you press down it will scratch somewhat. I also like the dash duster for my messy BMW wheels as long as you don't let the brake dust accumulate too much.

Follow up with a quick pass with your favorite quick detailer, and everyone will swear that you spent an hour washing it.

Another key thing to remember is that it's a "duster". Dont try to use it to remove baked on crud like dirt splashes, etc. Light pressure, and if whatever doesnt come off, dont apply more pressure, instead wash or use a quick detailer if possible.

Is the wrapping in newspaper only necessary when brand new, or should it be wrapped in newspaper after each use?

It should be fine after that. If you notice little streaks on your paint, throw it in the paper again for a day. Be VERY carefull using this duster. I've seen quite a few posts of people getting scratches from using it. The paint wasn't as clean as they thought it was before using it. I feel much more comfortable using a good MF towel for dusting my car. I'll use the MF towel for 2 uses or so then move on to a clean one. After I get about 4-5 dirty MF from dusting, I just throw them in the wash with liquid detergent and put it on gently cycle. I then hang dry them. Like I said, I've used the duster but feel better using the towels. Just my .02

Man, I burned my duster like a torch after I saw all the scratches it laid on my car. Maybe there was something defective with it but it did a horrible job on my car. I curse the day I bought it. But I guess if they work for everyone else then mine must have been a one time experience. I may muster up the guts to get another one someday but not anytime soon. I don't trust them. And as much as I hate having my car get dusty it is worth it not to have it scratched and dusty.

I have begun cautious use of the Duster. I keep my car covered, day and night, so it does not get very dirty between washes, therefore I am not trying to use the Duster to push around a lot of dirt.

As others say they do, I apply no pressure and, in fact, only let the first inch or so of the duster touch the paint. Its a very light dusting. I shake the duster every four strokes or so.

I used to go over the car with a towel before puting the cover on. I suspect that the duster is easier on the paint. And, it is very quick.

Time will tell.

Good Luck everyone! It has ben a lot of fun. There were a lot of GREAT posts. If Bill wins like everyone seems to think, it couldn't happen to a nicer person (but I really want to win).

I want to wish everyone good luck as well. This has been a great contest with some very interesting posts. Look at it this way if Luster wins, maybe he will be so busy playing around with all the new products that we can all catch up to him on posting. Maybe
