Removing Swirls, list of order of abrasiveness

I just began the process to remove some swirl marks, spider webbing and scratches on my Silver vehicle.

I was using the Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover with a PC 7424 on 4-4.5 and am not getting rid of all of these imperfections. I applied this with multiple coats, and still am not seeing the results.

Is there a chart that details the various levels of abrasiveness so I can purchase the product that would eliminate these imperfections?

Here is a thread that lists a lot (but not all) of the polishes and is a good ball-park reference to get you started:

I'm surprised that the ASR didn't work better for you, I just received some but haven't had a chance to try it out. The reviews list it as a bit more aggressive than DACP and SSR2.5 if my memory serves me correctly. I do know it feels more abrasive than my DACP and 3M PI III RC (rubbing compound).

What pad were you using this with? Did you try a light cutting pad like the Sonus or LC orange? Some keys to successful defect removal are to work a small area at a time (~ 2 x 2), use a bit faster PC speed (5-6) with slow arm passes, and to work the polish long enough to break it down properly.

There is also a limit to what the PC is capable of doing, but with the right polish/pad and technique you can do quite a bit with the PC. You also donâ€â„¢t list what type of car youâ€â„¢re working on; some have a very hard clear that is hard to polish.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to review the link you listed.

I was using an Orange pad that was included with my purchase from Autugeek.net in thier Palm Beach Motoring Accessories Dual Action 6.5" Foam Pad kit. It came with the velcro backing plate, and 3 pads, Orange, White and Black.

I am working on a Silver 2002 Ford Lightning. I do have some deep scratches on the hard tonneua and I don't expect them to come out. However, I do have some spider webbing and lighter scratches that don't catch my fingernail and it wasn't making an improvement. Could it be that I need to increase the speed on the PC?

Thanks again, off to read the link you mentioned above.

Yes, I would work the PC speed faster (don't be afraid to go up to 6 if needed), make slow passes with it, work a small area at a time (2x2), and make sure you work it long enough to break it down. It is fairly aggressive and you will most likely have to follow-up with a lighter polish like Pinnacle Swirl Remover, Megâ€â„¢s #80, etc. to remove some hazing it might leave behind. On silver it might not be noticeable until you look at it in different lighting conditions and different angles.

You are correct that you wonâ€â„¢t be able to remove deep scratches, but you should see an improvement in your spider webbing and lighter scratches.

OK, I will give that a shot tomorrow. I purchased a number of Pinnacle products or got them during the Autogeek giveaway, so I have the PSR and PASR along with the Paintwork Cleansing Lotion and the Signature Series wax. I also got in for the Wolfgang Paint Sealant.

My plan of attack was as follows:

PASR using PC

PSR using PC

Paintwork Cleansing Lotion applied by hand

Signature Series Wax using PC

Should I do the Sealant after this with the PC?

Thanks again

If by sealant you mean the Signature Series Wax, then I would just apply it by hand with a foam applicator. If it's anything like their Souveran wax then it goes on like butter, a real pleasure to use.

If you mean the Wolfgang Paint Sealant, then that's one of the Autogeek specials that I haven't used yet. Use it before the Signature and allow it to cure for a day before topping it with another coat or with Signature. I'd say you could apply it either by hand or with a finish pad (black or grey) on the PC (use a lower speed).

I tried again today with the speed of the PC up to 5-6 depending on the condition, and it still didn't appear to remove as much as I wanted.

Where would the Pinnacle Swirl and Advanced Swirl Remover fall in the list that you provided with the link above?

I don't mind purchasing another product, and have been looking at Poorboys.

Thanks again
