Removing dealer decal

I just found this site today and thought it would be a good place get help. I have an '02 Jeep Liberty that has a faded, dried out dealer decal(sticker) on the tailgate that I want to remove. What would be the best way to get it off without damaging the paint? I wanted some expert advice before I even started. I am at work now so I can't post pics but once I get home I will if needed. Thanks

Heat the sticker with a hair dryer and peel what you can with your fingers. There will most likely be glue residue left on the paint. A liquid paint cleaner or Bug and Tar remover should get the glue off. BE PATIENT AND CAREFUL

you probably wont need a heat gun. just park the back of the jeep facing the sun tomorrow.

the metal should heat up the adhesive. try to get a corner started with fingernail. dont apply pressure to the paint.

it's hard to explain, its just catching the sticker with your nail, while not applying any downward force.

once you get enough started, you can grab and pull it off.

then hit it with the bug and tar removal.

they also sell a vinyl stripe remover that will work, just spray, sit, and wipe, but that stuff is toxic

I'll try the sun idea first and see how that works out. What stinks is that it isn't one whole decal, each letter is on there individually. Thanks for the advice and I'll let you know how it goes.

Should be able to peel it off with your fingernail.

GooGone works pretty well at dissolving the vinyl graphic adhesives.

you might need to finish up with a heavy cut polish, or, if the car is really old, you might even need to sand a little bit to match the paint behind the decal with the surrounding paint, otherwise you'll see a outline of the old decal..
