how do i remove mud/dirt stain on muffler pipe (steel)? i try high pressure water, but I still see dirt residue/marks. anyways to get the metal pipe back to silver

The Mother's and Meg's are both a soft paste. I have a link in my first post to what the Meg's looks like. There are a lot of good metal polishes out there, but I suggested those two since they might be easy for you to find locally.

Eliot, would claying help?
It wouldn't hurt to try, but when I think of a stain on metal I usually just grab some metal polish. I'm also thinking that since it is on his exhaust it might need the extra abrasives of a metal polish. Of course once you get one spot polished then you want to do the rest so it looks just as nice.

I have used a few things, clay as Elliot as suggested is a start, next would be 0000 steel wool this will remove what is on the surface and not scratch the pipe, lastly a chemical based polish would be my choice...To protect the pipe a high temp sealant would be in order.

is it #000, #0000 or #00000?

i'm sure I read threads mentioning steel wool, but which one should be used?
0000 is very fine and comes in handy for a lot of stuff. 000 is just a little more coarse, and steel wool is cheap so buy some of each to have on hand. You can find it almost anywhere they sell stuff like paint..... Lowes and HD like Klnyc mentioned, and I think Wal-Mart even had some the last time I looked.

Are you the OP, or do you just have a similar stain on you exhaust? It really depends on the type of metal (plain exhaust pipe, polished, chrome, stainless, etc.) and the stain on how I would attack it first. Everyone should also have some metal polish in their stash to clean, seal, and protect.
