I feel that planes are not the answer but rather helicopters would be the key to mass air travel.

They would also have to be an auto pilot system that there is no user input. Think of the crazies on the road now and what a crash in the air looks like.

Better would be a rail system that your car can hop on and that would be a controlled system. Merging and speed would be all controlled while you take a nice snooze.
 
I particularly like the downward ejection seat for the family members.........something I would use often if they were at their destination or not.
