Rasky's Auto Detailing: 2008 VW R32

This question is probably "detailing 101", but I don't know so I'll ask. Is there a good way to get the scratches and swirl marks out of my wind deflector on the front of my truck? Can it be restored to to a clear black look like new?

Seems like most of the threads are addressing cleaning and protecting plastic that is in good condition. Will the products listed also remove scratches and swirls already in the plastic? Thanks..
 
I have cleaned and removed scratches on numerous hard pieces like headlight covers, air deflectors, tailight lenses with 3M Finesse It.



Use same process you would for paint. The difference is even more outstanding.
 
I certainly appreciate all of you who were so prompt and helpful on this thread. Nice of you to have patience with a fellow who only gets a car worth keeping nice every 10 years or so..
 
Zaino makes a polish and cleaner specifically for plastics. It has a mild abrasive so can be used to polish out scratches (I do not know if it will handle deep scratches, but I don't think it does). As with any product containing any abrasive, you are best advised to test on an inconspicuous area of the plastic. Here are Zaino's statements about the product:



"Z-14 PLASTIC-MAGIC CLEANER & POLISH



Z-14 is designed to clean and protect all types of plastic surfaces without scratching. It can be used on clear or colored plastics from very thin films to very thick acrylics, lexan, abs, plexiglass, etc. Z-14 deep cleans as it polishes and restores dull plastic to like new condition. It penetrates and seals, tiny scratches and pores in plastic to increase surface clarity and reduce distortion. Z-14 is fast drying and leaves no sticky, oily or greasy residue. It creates an ultra-slick, anti-static, smudge free surface. Great for restoring old plastic lenses and other hard plastic parts. Not for use on vinyl surfaces."
 
2008 VW R32, paint correction only.

The owner recently purchased this car out of state. It has about 45,000 miles on the clock and the paint was in pretty rough shape. Upon inspection you could see heavy cob-webbing and a few noticeable RIDS. The owner and I talked about different options and we opted for a 2-step correction, which was in his budget and I felt should reach his desired goal of 90-95% correction. I had also offered to spot hit the RIDS with M105 and then planned to do the whole car with SIP and PO85RD via the rotary. After doing a few test spots the webbing was easily removed by SIP, but it reveled more of the deeper scratches, which would not come out without several passes of SIP. My OCD got the best of me and I went ahead and did a 3-step correction. I phoned the customer and said I was unhappy with the amount of correction I was getting with my planned process and that I was going to do the extra step at no extra charge. With the below process I felt I easily achieved 95% correction, if not more. ;)


Process:

Wash ? Meguiars Gold Class using the 2BM
Wheels ? P21S gel and various brushes, ZAIO, Opti-Seal
Tires ? Amazing Roll Off, Hyper Dressing 3:1
Clay ? Meguiars Mild Clay, Last Touch (Owner had recently clayed and the car didn?t need much claying)
Trim ? Meguiars Ultimate Protectant (Lab Sample P)
Glass ? Meguiars D120
Headlamps - M105/M205/ZAIO
Taillights ? M205/ZAIO
Door shuts ? ZAIO (M105/M205 on the rockers)
Correction step 1- M105 via rotary and wool pad
Correction step 2 ? M105 via PCXP and Cyan LC Hydro pad
Correction step 3 ? M205 via PCXP and Tangerine LC Hydro pad
LSP ? Blackfire Wet-Diamond

Incredible work !! That beautiful blue metallic really pops the metallic now!

I looked at these little pocket rockets in 2008, and almost bought one.

Too bad they quit making them.

The 1st two steps took the most time but I'd guess I spent about 8 hours doing the buffing....didn't really keep track though. I had also done a few sections with SIP before I changed my mind so that added some time too. :biggrin:

Incredible customer service and beautiful work Rasky! To me the real "pro" detailer isn't happy with the results from what was discussed with the customer (i.e. 2 step approach), phones him up and says I'll throw in another step because I think it can look better.

As I've said before, I love the guys that help our reputation and there's another good example. That customer must have fallen over when he saw his car.
