Page, Clapton, Hendrix, S.R. Vahn, E. Van Halen...all great, for sure. Rarely did you hear them play anything but rock-n-roll though. Still, I'm a big fan. However, let's see if we can expose some folks to other great players...and later we'll discover where rock got its roots. Shall we?
However, someone did mention Roy Clark...the Guitar Wizard...if he could play this (below) he could play anything he wanted. This is but one of the many styles Roy was blessed with not to mention playing other instruments as well.

Let's not forget the late Chet Atkins, also called by his fans and peer, Mr. Guitar, along with the great Les Paul. Here's a duo from back in the day.

Chet Atkins played with many other great guitarists,Glen Campbell, Steve Wariner, Vince Gill, the late Jerry Reed, and and many, more. Chet loved playing guitar with Jerry and said he was one of the greatest.
Here's Jerry:

Of course, the songs Amos Moses, and Guitar Man were big hits for Jerry. Just do a youtube search.
Let's not forget the King of Rockabilly...Carl Perkins...who along with Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis played with Elvis Presley on a very early recording that's recently been released.
Here's Carl Perkins in 1957.

Look closely as you might just miss seeing Eric Clapton and Ringo Star. For those that aren't aware; the song in this video is a bluegrass song written by the late Bill Monroe. Lots and lots music styles and mixtures...even with the guests.

However, since I love all types of music I thought I'd mention a few of my favorites. No amplifiers and such here...just pure pickin'.
The recently deceased [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RML22JcvwJ4"]Doc Watson Dead At 89 After Fall - YouTube[/ame] and blue grass and folk artist, Doc Watson. Doc, unlike many of the other artists already mentioned, had no trouble pickin' and singin' at the same time.
For those in the know, not all artists can finger pick and sing at the same time. So, here's the late Doc Watson.
Doc in his early years.

Doc at a much later time, same song, better view.

Then there's Marty Stuart, Ricky Skaggs, many, many others...along with Tony Rice.

One last video. In this video you'll see what other legends had to say about Carl Perkins, who's career suffered a huge set-back from and auto accident. More of Carl Perkins and friends (w/Eric Clapton).

The sound of Carl Perkins's guitar had a huge impact on Elvis Presley in his early career. One became the King if Rock, the other the King of Rockabilly. The rest is history!
One things for sure...good guitar playing has no boundaries!!!
Sorry! I can't just pick one guitar player. Most of my favorites were not just guitar players, rather, all around great singers on top of being legends of the strings.
