My friend and I were recently having a discussion. We got into an altercation as to whether or not it is possible to drift a front wheel drive car. He has a Nissan Sentra SE-R with no suspension modifications and claims that it is NOT possible to do with his car. I, however, claim that it IS possible.

So, here it is...

Can a front wheel drive car (ie Nissan Sentra SE-R)??

I would appreciate responses as well as voting in the poll...

So what's the answer?????

I just had a ride in a Sentra. I am afraid I do not know the year or model. The car had a full roll cage and race seats and was moderately upgraded engine and suspension wise (airfilter and shocks) but nothing at all radical. It was mostly safety related.

The driver, however, was probably 10 times the driver I am and he drives in the expert level group at the track. At the last outing at Gateway International Raceway he took this Sentra and flat out blew many Porsches and Z's and much better cars off the track because he was a much better driver. Looking at the outside of the car it was so smooooth. The car drifted as you mention, just enough, then caught, then powered along then then when it when hard through another tight series of esses it did the same thing back and forth. It was smoooooth and beautiful to watch on the outside. Now, on the inside, this guy was working the steering wheel like there was no tomorrow. He was constantly in a frenzy feeding wheel input and measuring traction with the FWD. It ws NOT easy. But he CONTROLLED that car. It was masterful to watch!

...as someone who learned to drive in the winter in mom's front wheel drive 1978 Dodge Colt, I can assure you it is possible to drift.

It is also possible to over-correct, setting up an out of control series

of fishtails, almost clobbering a parked car on a side street.

PS don't tell my mom
