Questions about "The Perfect Shine" guide

Hello,

I'm beginner in the Detailing techniques and I just have read "The Perfect Shine" guide and have some doubts about some comments that David does in it.

David says: "The P21S Carnauba Wax formula uses a highly refined petroleum distillate, much the same as that used in the manufacture of cosmetics". Does mean that P21S is the only one wax with highly refined petroleum distillates? Are there other quality brands?

Another comment: "As a result, even the mildest petroleum distillates remove polymer sealants." Is that true for all sealants?

I'm using Poorboy's products and now have doubts about if its petroleum distillates are high quality.

Please, David or someone, hope you resolve my uncertainties.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you are asking...are you asking if Poorboy's makes a good wax (one with "high quality petroleum distillates")? Are you asking if Poorboy's sealants will be removed by waxes with petroleum distillates in them?

All carnauba paste waxes will have some sort of solvent as a carrier for the carnauba. I think these are going to be "petroleum distillates". I'm suspecting you took David's quote a bit out of context and that he was saying that P21S (a part of the "Perfect Shine" process) would remove polymer sealants but not acrylic sealants (such as Klasse, another part of the "Perfect Shine" process).

I'm guess a more highly refined petroleum distillate might be less disturbing to underlying sealants...but I suppose it could also go the other way if the underlying sealant was extremely sensitive to the particular specificity that the petroleum was refined to.

Anyway...the Pb's waxes are apparently pretty comparable to P21S (I haven't used either...some day I'll get around to that jar of Natty's that I won), and although I'm not very impressed with my older version of EX-P (for reasons I won't elaborate on here), I don't think you will have any problem layering P21S over any Poorboy's sealants, nor will you have any difficulty layering any of the Natty's flavors over any sealant you would like.

Standard layering disclaimers like "some people don't think this works" etc. should be inserted here...

It's petroleum distillates are probably not that strong and won't dissolve much of anything. When we talk PD's dissolving things, we usually mean 3M bug and tar remover, gasoline, diesel, etc which will strip wax. I'm not sure where David got the part about mild PD's stripping sealants - I'll defer to his knowledge, but I haven't seen it myself.

I attach the text where it's said:

How The Perfect Shine Works

There's no particular magic to my process; however, at least two of the ingredients are key. Finish preparation is the most significant function of the process. The paint finish must be refined through several grades of polish. This is how jewelry makers create gems of radiant beauty.

The key ingredients are Klasse All-In-One and Pinnacle P21S Carnauba Wax. The reason these two products work together, where others do not, is actually pretty simple. Klasse is an acrylic resin coating. It's not a petroleum- or water-based product. It's an acrylic. When it dries, it dries hard. Most synthetic sealants are polymers based on the element silicone.

To my knowledge, all polymer sealants are based on an emulsion system containing petroleum distillates. As a result, even the mildest petroleum distillates remove polymer sealants. Zaino Show Car Polish is the only polymer sealant that I'm aware of that can be successfully layered (a new application of Zaino Show Car Polish does not remove previous applications).

Likewise, carnauba waxes contain petroleum distillates. In waxes, petroleum distillates are used to soften the carnauba, which is rock hard in its raw form, so it can be blended into a paste or cream. The P21S Carnauba Wax formula uses a highly refined petroleum distillate, much the same as that used in the manufacture of cosmetics (i.e., lipstick wax). The solvent content in P21S Carnauba Wax does not affect the cured Klasse sealant. By conducting side-by-side durability tests, I have proven Klasse remains solidly intact.

According to this, and if I correctly understood, the petroleum distillates of all polymer sealants do that sealants are removed themselves, except Zaino Show car Polish. Likewise, carnauba waxes contain petroleum distillates, therefore these waxes remove polymer sealants, except P21S Carnauba Wax. It that true or I did not understand well?

There have been many new sealants introduced since that was written (as well as a Zaino reformulaltion). Additionally, the statement does not say that P21S is the only wax that will not effect Klasse.
