Questions about Claying....

I am planning on claying my Jeep, but I have a few questions about it first:

There are some scratches (some deep, some not so deep) that I want to fix, I was told that the Langka Complete Paint Chip Repair Kit works well, should I clay the car before using this kit, or does it matter? or affect its effectiveness?

Also, after I clay I am going to wax, but the only type of Wax I currently have is Turtle Wax. Should I purchase something other than the TW or will that be fine?

Is there any other surface preparation I need before waxing?


Also, any other tips on what not to do would be helpful. :) I have never done anything like this to my car before and I don't want to make any fatal mistakes, so I would appreciate any help.

I would clay then fix your chips. I have uesd the Langka system and it works OK on small rock chips but not the long scratches, if you have those to repair.
You could do just as well with some factory paint, what I do is filll the chip wait a bit do it again untl I can get the paint to sit above the surface of the car, then wet sand down and finish up with polish to smooth out.

As for the wax that would be OK to use but you might want to look at polish or a swril remover to smooth out the clear cost before you go to the next step.

Poorboys World one of the sponsors here would be a good choice for his Polish with carnuba. I use it all the time and its a great one step process and the TW over the top would give you even better a shine.
 
I've got a pretty complete detailing guide on www.ocdetails.com that might help you. There is an article on claying that could be of use. I can't be much help on the Langka questions, but I do know that its for touch up and not random scratch removal. If they are scratches that can be polished out, then I wouldn't suggest Langka. That is not a beginner product and is not designed to remove light scratches or swirls. You will need touch up paint as well as the Langka kit anyway. Scratch repair is not something that you will necessarily get right on the first try. I've been practicing for 5 years and I still suck at it.
 
Thanks for the replies. A friend told me that Meguiar's Scratch X (in Wal-Mart) works well for small scratches, but I'm alittle wary of things like that. Only $6 anyone used it before?
 
That Megs product is an agressive and will not hurt your car, but you are going to want to polish after that. I have used it and its worked well for me. If you are doing this by hand then work in small areas atbou 12 x 12 inches at a time. This helps to get better control of the pressure.
 
i used it. it seems to get rid of swirls pretty good and kind of gets rid of really fine scrtches, but it doesnt work miracles.

What would recommend I use to polish?

I've got some scratches that are deep, and some that are really fine, thats why I was wondering if this worked. I will probably get the Langka and if that will not fix the smaller scratches try the scratch X on those.
