how do you know when you have gone through the clear coat and is it possible to do so with a pc random orbit?? thanks

In reverse order:
1. Yes it is possible to burn through with a PC. A search will find others who have done it here.
2. There is various damage a machine can cause:
a. burn off edges: usually left with metal only
b. holograms/swirls/buffing marks
c. burn trim or moldings
d. burn through clear to the base.

When this happens, you get a dull look to the paint. Base is not shiny. And you might feel like the texture is closer to ... I'm not sure how to put it ... sometimes like aligator skin after a massage, or an 1976 leisure suit. Usually the burn will be in an oval shape, with a haze around the edge and then shiny around that.

Any pics?

o no i was just wondering because i used it on y grandfathers suv the other day ( he has millions of swirls) and i was like my 5th time ever using a porter cable and it took the swirls away like nobody's business and the shine was incredible so i said to myself this thing cant be that good so i thought well i hope i didnt go through the clearcoat and this is the base shining really good but there was no hazing or anything like you described i guess maybe the pc is truly mans best friend

It's a good machine. I' learned on the Rotary, but I had a lot of crappy cars to learn bad and good on before I got nice cars.

LOL PEI, you do have a way with words. "Like aligator skin after a massage, or an 1976 leisure suit," cracked me up. Have you ever massaged one? Or worn one? :lmfao
