Question about which products to use...

Poorboys Rules!
So...I finally got a quick opportunity to try out the PC that I bought back in September. I didn't want to tear into the whole car until I was comfortable with it, so I started on the hood last night. I was excited to see that 99.9% of the scratches all came out as well as a nice big bird poop stain which I was concerned about...it came right out!!! I only did the passenger side of the hood (like I said, I didn't want to get too far only to find that I was making a big mess). I can't believe the difference this PC made in the swirls.

Anyway I used Poorboys SSR1, then hit it with a little Mequiar's cleaner wax and then threw a little Mequiar's NXT on top of that. It still seems a tad bit hazy to me. I was really hoping to see a deep rich glossy shine.

So I guess what I'm asking is, seeing what I used above, can anyone suggest some other products I should try to see if I can get a richer shine to it. I'm overly satisfied that the Poorboys did the trick on the swirls, it's the really wet shine that I want to achieve.

By the way, this is a black 2006 Mercury Mariner I'm working with...

Oh...and also...how do I clean the pads after I used them??? Can I just rinse them in warm water, or do I need to throw them out and buy new?

So now that you have the pc under your belt, you're almost ready for a rotory:D no really it's an easy machine to use, just remember it has limitations and does take time to get use to. For the pads, just use some liquid laundry detergent with warm water in a bucket or sink and rinse it out thoroughly, don't mind the stain the SSR1 leaves, it in no way inhibits its use with other products. As for your haze, you might have use two waxes that were incompatable in that short of a time span. How did it look after the SSR1, and then after the cleaner wax?

Anyhow, welcome to the trial and error club and the search for the perfect shine on black:huh::notme::)

As for your haze, you might have use two waxes that were incompatable in that short of a time span. How did it look after the SSR1, and then after the cleaner wax?

After the SSR1, it looked very hazy/milky. Then after the Meg's cleaner wax the haze was almost completely gone. I tried the NXT thinking that would really brighten it up which it did to a certain extent, but I guess I'm just looking too hard for perfection. LOL. The thing I'm most happy with is that there are no more swirls!! :rockon

What else might I try after the SSR1?

I've used the NXT wax on our zinc yellow Mustang GT and it really shines on there. I think I may need to try a different polish or something.

I used an orange pad and speed was 4500. Was that incorrect?

The orange is good for corrections, but it's where your haze came from.
You might try going over it again with a finishing pad (not sure which pad mfg. you are using, so i won't say color) at the same speed and retry the other steps. You'll see an immediate difference and the haze will be gone :)

With Poorboy's product you'll have to try different combos of pad and product and see what results you get. Thats what I think is so great about Steve's product is that they are very versatile. So get your PC out and play with it and have fun.

Also a quick trick with SSR1 is to crank up the speed to #6 before your final removal of the product (with polishing or finishing pad)- it produces a very nice glossy finish that will be ready for LSP.

As for the wax then the NXT, from prior reading most recommend the NXT(synthetic polymer) be used following the cleaning of the vehicles paint. for example following paint correction, polishing, and or claying the surface. The polymer seals the paint. Follow up with a light coat of wax approximately 7 days later for extra shine, this gives the polymer time to attach to the clean paint surface. RANDAL

Thanks so much for all of the tips guys...I really appreciate it. I'll give these a shot and see what happens.

Lots of great info here, i think most of the info is covered. One thing i would like to throw out however is the idea of a paint cleanser. All polishes have oils in them.
The cleaner wax will help remove the oils however its still a wax, after the polsih and before the wax try a cleanser. I think you will be supprised at the deth and wetness it brings.
There are many great cleansers available at AG.

just my 2 cents

This is the kind of look I was hoping to get...

This picture makes me excited to keep trying.:yay

If a wet shine your looking for...try duragloss 105 and 101 combo...

read this post and see results

Autogeekonline Car Detailing Forum - DuraGloss 101 and 105

using the 101 with the micro abrasives seems to really add a gloss to the paint..and then lock it in with 105....and then maintain it with Aquawax ..a real wet looking product..basicly a spray sealant/booster..and you have your wet look

this was a method I played with last fall...and passed it on to a few AG members when they asked me about the Duragloss products
