Question about insurance?

I am just starting out detailing, I am still in high school. Do I have to have insurance if people drop their car off at my house and I detail it, or will I have to have insurance whenever I can drive to my detail jobs. What would the price for something like this be? Is it required? I am doing this for a summer job and if I can get some steady contacts I will do it for more than the summer, which I am hoping to do?

My guess is you will have a hard time getting insurance if you are under 18. Definitely talk to your parents. They will want to make sure they are protected as well since you are their legal responsibility.

Insurance is not outrageous, but it is expensive enough to deter those who only do one or two cars per month.

At your age you are better off working in a shop or as an apprentice with someone with experience.

One young guy that worked for me started out detailing out of his parents garage (before he was working for me) and said he had gotten insurance under his parents' names to cover his detailing business.

But I agree with Nth Degree, you should really gain some experience working with someone else before you go out on your own. It's common for people to think detailing is easy when in reality it is not (proper detailing anyway).

Exactly, David! One little "fubar" and the young man's family could lose everything they have worked for. He needs to talk with the family's insurance agent, his family, etc.

Life is not just about "detailing", but all the potential financial possible losses and gains.

Lots of exposure to insure in this situation. I'd reach out to your insurance person for advice.

I started out in my garage at the age if 15. I thought about insurance from time to time. But nothing ever really happened. after a year i had an idea to put a percentage off to the side (just in case fund) so if anything were to happen i would be financially prepared. It was smart at the time because I wasn't even a real business then plus if I were to incorperate then and insure. The cost of insuring at my age would have been outrageous.

There are the things you need to consider:

- what is my level of experience.?

- do I feel comfortable enough in my experience or do I feel like I might have some 'goof ups'? (I.e: do I know why and how wetsanding works and the proper precautions before I attempt it) that sort of thing

- do I live in a bad weather area where a customers vehicle may be damaged?

- if there is a fire somehow how easily can I remove the vehicle from danger?

Plus some more obvious considerations. But I think you will do great with your business. Detailing is a very addicting passion to pick up and chances of you continuing on after this summer are very high. Take care ,
