Proper way to dry after wash

I have seen multiple posts that some people don't wipe their vehicle but rather blot it dry. I have often wondered why this is. Some say it prevents marring. The big question I have is that when you you QD a car or even wax it. Do you blot the vehicle dry? If not, then why not. I would suspect you would create swirls on a vehicle by using your favorite QD no matter how soft you rubbed/wiped. At least with a wash then you have gotten the dirt off and less prone to creating swirls. I just don't understand the concept of blotting to prevent swirls but will use a QD on a dirty/dusty car. You can't blot using a QD...you must wipe...All explanations appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Everyone has different amounts of protection they use on there car. The people that blot there car dry most likely don't QD a dirty car. A lot of people on the boards use a QD after the wash to help dry. I'm not sure how familiar you're with Spray and Wipe, but if that's what you are referring to, that's not a QD. It's much more and can be used on dirty cars.

Hope this helps.

I use my synthetic chamoise (sp?) to mop up the majority of water by laying it flat over the panel, then pulling it towards me...then I use my waffle weave microfiber to buff up the rest of the water streaks. I'll use a QD liberally if there is any spotting and this seems to work well for me.
This is of course, after having some sort of protection on the finish already, to help protect against marring.

I use Poorboys Spray and Wipe everytime I dry now. I use a Cobra Supreme Waffle Weave towel and the Spray and Wipe. It reduces micro marring to almost non-existing levels. If there are any streaks or water spots they are gone using this procedure. There is a significant reduction in friction of the towel rubbing the surface.
I used everything from chamoris to asorbers. I always had swirls induced by everything I tried until I started using WW towels with the Spray and Wipe. No more marring and the paint looks super clean.

I let the hose flow free on my suv, most of the water ends up sheeting off. Then I grab my electric blower and use it, blows water off and get's it out of all the nooks and crannies where it loves to stay on truck. Especially aorund the windows which can drip hours later if you just towel dry. There's usually very tiny beads of water left around, just quickly spray some QD on the truck, and then dry/buff with a microfiber. No marring, and no water spots. When I use to try to dry even wit ha waffle weave, I'd still get waterspots before using the electric blower and QD.

People will look at you funny when using the blower though, especially landscapers:lmfao

Hmmm I liberally spray QD as I dry, so I swipe/wipe to be honest. S&W or Adam's DS both have waterless wash, so I don't worry.

When I am doing a detail, I spend 30 or so minutes washing a vehicle. I use a firehose spayer to free rinse the vehicle. Then I use a water blade and squegee the water off and pull it to a dry area and use an absorber to dry the rest off. This has worked for me for 12 years wihtou damage or scratches.

When you use the Spray and Wipe while you dry, do you actually wipe it off? Or do you blot?

I wipe it off. Not a problem. Spray and Wipe adds enough lubricity to protect it from any swirls. Paint pops after doing this. If you have missed any dirt at all the Spray and Wipe is extra insurance against swirls.
