professional vs. walmart products ????

what kind of a difference is there (performance wise) between products that one can get only from the internet stores and products that you can get at the local Walmart or Autozone or Murrays auto parts store ( like Meguires or Mother's etc )

Please advise ...I am relatively new to this whole detailing process.

TIA

My advice would be to research this site, see what products there are and for what applications. Read peoples opinions of the products. The ones you are interested in, try out. That way you'll kind of build your own knowledge database on what you like; be it from wal mart or online stores.

Personally I try to use cheaper locally found products whenever possible. (Sheepskin washmitt [walmart] gold class shampoo, etc.) Some products you have to go online to get (at least for me) like Klasse, good mf towels etc. that give the performance I'm looking for.

Some products can be found in the weirdest locations (S100 - Harley dealerships, 303 - Boaters world)

Adi, theres really nothing wrong wth those products, they just dont provide the jaw dropping, awe inspiring, double takes, that our sick little Autopian minds need. If you decide you want to do something with detailing, in respect to added income, you will need to more than likely venture out and discover some of these product. i.e., Blackfire, Klasse, Platinum, Clearkote, Poorboys, etc to name a few....You have to remember, once bitten by the Autopian bug, your destined for a lifetime of incureable illness......

find a product(s) that you like and stick with them if they give

you results you like. It's more of a process than the product

itself. do some research on this site for more info.

WalMart, KMart, Target, Pep Boys, AutoZone, Murrays etc... are our friends!

You can do no harm in using Mothers or Meguiars three step process that is for sale at any chain store.

You can purchas and use from these places: MF's, sheepskin mitt, Gold Class shampoo, Mothers clay, Lexol products, 303, glass cleaners, many brushes, applicators, cotton rags, quick detailers, chrome polishes, leather products and engine degreasers. Also don't forget some of the carnubas like Mothers and Meguiars new NXT coming out soon

You can also get Meguiars #7, #9 and #26 at most stores like Pep Boys. Also, they have 3M Fine Cut and 3M Cleaner Wax too

In fact, I bet you can have just as good a look with store bought products as you can with high end products if you use the right process and technique.

Just invest in a PC and proper pads and you'll be set!

There is not a doubt in my mind that Scottwax could go to any store you named, spend less than $50, and a couple of hours later blow away anything I can do with $300 worth of products and a week of hard labor.

I have several thousand dollars worth of golf equipment but I know Tiger Woods could kick my *** with just a baseball bat. Scottwax is the Tiger Woods of detailing.

You really can't categorize all products sold at local distributors as all "good" or all "bad". You have to go by the product.

Autozone and other auto places carry good products like Meguiar's polishes as well as a few others mentioned above and Autozone carries some not-so-great products as well. Don't think that just because you bought a detailing product off the web that it's gonna be your cure-all. Just gotta go by the product.

As mentioned in previous posts, you can find lots of things at those stores that are worth the money. I don't use many products from Mother's, but don't have a problem with the look I can get from a few of the Meg's products at the local Pep Boys or Autozone. I've tried a few other things I can only find on the internet for things like wax and sealant, but have a hard time jusitifying the price of the product and shipping for some of them when I can grab some #26 and #7 or something from 3M and get amazing results. I do order my MF towels and a few hard to find products on the web, but I could go to the selection of local auto parts stores, grab some products, and get great results. I think it is more the time, attention to detail, and patience a person puts into the job than the products. An impatitent person with the most expensive products won't produce results that could compare with a person who's really into what they're doing with a can of the cheapest thing on the shelf.

I echo what has been said, and add this: buying expensive great smelling imported products from all over the world is fun, but don't kid yourself. Do it with your eyes open. Do it because you like buying the products, not because you think they will work better. The best advice I've heard is Mike Phillips' sig, a quote from Jack Anderson of PPG: "Find something you like and use it often." For some of use that will be Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, for others Zymol Vintage.

I think you have a vastly over inflated opinion of me. I believe most people, using quality products and using the proper techniques can achieve what I can. Maybe not quite as fast as I do, but repetition does have its rewards. ;)

Product you can purchase in stores are great. In fact, many of the "professional" products that are used can be bought in stores such as the Meguiar's Professional line.

The main difference I see between consumer and professional stuff is that professional products you can get in bulk. i.e. I can spend $25 to get a gallon of a product and in a store you might spend $10 for 16oz. That's alright though as I'm guessing you won't be needing a gallon of compound.

Some professional products can also be stronger than normal consumer products. Really, there is not much of a difference.

I'm also not sure what you are referring to as Professional products. When I think professional lines I think PRO, Valuguard, Production, etc.

Scott, it's not your detailing skills that drew the Tiger comparisons......it's that hot swedish model whose day begins and ends in your boxers that make you the TW of auto detailing!! :D :bounce :D :bounce

Lets not forget the local paint stores that carry meguiars and 3m products. Thats the main places where we can pick up polishes like dacp, fi2, smr(3m and meguiars), and even 3m fine cut rubbing compound(ive also found this at murrays). I think ppl should really pay attention to those places, bc those are the products that contribute to a great detail(besides the user's experience).
