Problem with PC7424 and LC CCS pads. Please help!

Learned a lot on this site and today I tried my first polishing with a Porter Cable 7424XP, LC CCS 5.5" Orange pads and Poorboy's SSR 2.5

Did the right side of the car with the first pad with no problem. The pad is like new.

Did the left side with another pad and the center of the pad colapsed, it's now really thin and the back look burned.

Tried a third pad on the hood and it did the same thing.

What did I do wrong? Did the PC got too hot?

Thanks for helping me!

Heat is my guess. I had a Flex almost smoking a few weeks ago and the backing of the foam pad melted onto the backing plate- and the backing plate was not doing that well either.

How much pressure were you putting on the machine? Did you hear it bog down a bit during use?

I have not seen it happen that fast..although I was not there watching how fast or slow you were moving the machine across the surface.

Interesting..Rob

For the first two pads I was putting too much pressure. After I saw that I went on a scale and I think I was putting 30-40 pounds of pressure. Did the hood with a third pad with 15-20 pounds and it did the same thing but maybe then the PC was already too hot.

I took 1.5h to do each side with a 10min break in between. Is this too much for the PC?

These posts seem to be popping up more often, although this is the first one with pictures attached. Kudos to the OP!

Have never had this happen to me, but from what I've read, it seems to be from heat and pressure.

When I use the PCXP, it's usually with about 15 - 20 pounds of force. Anything more than that for long periods of time seems to be too much load for the machine. Not that 40 pounds will STOP the machine, it just wont be as effective.

While I have never had a pad collapse from heat, I have melted the pad Velcro, from too much heat.

Had the same thing happen to me with my LC Orange Flat pad. It was the first time it's ever happen to me but then again, i usually use Uber pads. I would be interested in knowing what the cause of this is, it really put me off on LC pads. I cleaned my pads every panel and never used too much product. Must of been from the pressure

Looks like they got too hot. Most likely from too much pressure, overloading of the product and overworking the pad.

I agree... This happens a lot more if the pad isn't completely dry too. The heat combined with a wet pad causes steam and will eventually melt the adhesive on the Velcro backing and can actually burn your pad as well. Softer paints tend to bog down the machine and really generate a lot of heat, so remove the pad and give the machine a break after every panel or two. Also, ease up on the machine a little, which should also help.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's managed to do this to a pad during their first attempts at using a DA...The glue holding the backing melted on mine though and I only bought a 2-pack so I'm down to one.

This is pretty much a universal problem and not just with LC's pad. Have experienced the same with buff & shine and SM Arnold pads. Any moisture (or chemicals) can create the steam needed to warp the pad or separate the velcro from the pad.
