Preview of New Optimum Hyper Compound

Ron has been doing alot of testing with the new OHC and this past Saturday I got hold of perhaps the worst Porsche I have ever seen. It was scratched beyond belief.....it amazed Ron just how bad it was (I'll post full pictures later in Click and Brag).

This new Hyper is alot more aggressive than the older Hyper but it still has a long working time and the low dusting is also still there.

Here is a picture of the Porsche hood while on the lift being serviced before we got it. Notice the condition of the hood in the light?

Well after Ron took out some dings he ran the new Hyper over half the hood with a yellow foam cutting pad at 1500 rpm's. It removed 97% of the heavy scratches and left behind minimal swirls, considering it's a more aggressive compound plus a foam cutting pad.

Here is a picture of the left half after being buffed and then rigt side untouched.

The picture quality ain't all that great but I'll post up some better ones in my next post tomorrow. You can see that the new Hyper left behind some halograms but they were easily removed with the following polishing steps.

We also wet sanded the rear quarter panel with 3000 grit paper and it removed all the marks with a yellow pad. I thought it would swirl more but as long as you work it comes out very nice. Stopping to soon will cause more swirls.

It seems to be on the aggressive level of Hi-Temps Extreme Cut/Powergloss...perhaps even an edge or so more. I'll be interested to see what others think as they start using it.

Will be looking foward to futher review Tony. You know ever since you turned me on to HT HCL it's my goto polish for tough panels.

So when I hear something has the possiblity of besting the ECL I've got to try it.

Is Dave just re-formulating the Hyper Compound or will there be different cut's of the same product?

Hey Morbid.....

This is a tweaking of the Hyper. Body shops wanted more cut and a faster cut also so David....basically revamped the whole formula. It has new abrasives in it but they wouldn't work in the original Hyper formula so he had to build a new beast from the ground up.

I just used up my last 4oz sample on this Porsche. I used it with both wool and an orange pad and if I had to I could finish out with it on a light colored car and a polish pad.

It tends to like the higher rpm range when cutting, like 1500 to 1700. Slings just a bit but David is going to try and correct that minor issue.

Anthony

Thanks for the reply Anthony. As I undersand it Dave produced the last version of HC with a wool pad in mind. So it was interesting to hear you mention working this new stuff with a foam pad. Is Optimum moving away from that?

Again keep us posted as to your testing and also when the new product will be available. I told myself I wasn't buying anymore polished till I used something all up. Yeah right.

I sure could have used it on the E320 I did this week. 10 years without polishing!

Another new product to look forward to. :)

Dang! I thought that only people in san antonio treated cars like this.

The hyper will give the body shops what they want but to make it detailer friendly has been hard.

With harder clears coming to the market it will be dificult to remove swirls from wool compounding. This product will offer light swirling that you should be able to remove in one to two steps with the polish.

Just a side note I don't work for Optimum. I'm friends with David and he values my feed back. I do a lot of work for a body shop and have the ability to give him feed back very fast.

shoot, I too just got the OHC, and a little more bite would have been nice with the beater I tested it on.

How well does OHC do using the PC?

Ive am buying the whole optimum line and menzerna line BUT i see that almost everyone uses a rotary with optimum.

Very interesting to hear this...

Looks like faint hologramming on the polished side of the bonnet, would the OHC perhaps respond to a couple of low speed passes (900rpm say) at the end of a set to refine the finish further?? This is a technique I use with aggressive compounds such as Power Gloss and G3 to avoid hologramming... Just a thought...

Looks like it performs brilliantly though, and Porsche paint (in the UK anyway) is very hard. :)

the OLD OHC was easy to work with a PC-results were pad dependent tho. IMO the old stuff seemed a bit weak.

I second that, it definitely has good cutting ability but I would have liked for it to be a little more aggressive. Thats why I'm so interested in how this new formula works with the PC.

Hello,

What we usually do is lift up on the pressure a bit, reduce the rpm and continue buffing. What I personally like to do is finish with a softer pad. For example I may cut with the compound and a yellow, wool or orange pad and then I'll use the Lake Country or the Optimum green pad with the OHC again, this time reducing the rpm's. I have even used the OHC with a black finishing pad and it gave me a very nice finish.

Very interested in hearing on how this performs compared to the older version. I love the older stuff, but I agree that it doesn't have much cut and the cut is entirely pad dependant. Will the new OHC be safe for the PC like the old one was? Let's hope it's easier to remove than the old stuff as well.

Hi there!

how could you know if what you have it's the old or the new OHC? I've just bought a bottle but it could've been stored for months before I got it and be the old one.

Is there any 'code' or labelling difference?

thanks!

The revised formula has only been available at the retail level for one week. Its not really meant for PC use. As was said earlier in the the thread, OHC was really designed for body shops (rotary use). It would be Un-Autopian though to assume it couldnt be used with a PC. So, you never know!
