practicing on wet sandind and rotary polishing

It was time to practice how to remove the orange peel effect from my car...

i am waiting for an order that contains 2500 and 3000 grit sand papers,6'' PFW and Meg's wool pad & diamond cut.So i used what i had at home and what i found in local market.

Meg's 1000 grit sand paper for wet sanding

3,5 '' PFW & Menzerna Power gloss compound on rotary

Menzerna RD 3.02 on orange LC 6''pad with rotary

Menzerna F106 FA on green LC 6''pad with rotary

Menzerna 85RD on black LC 5,5'' pad with UDM

i did only the hood and the right front fender.

Then i took the car out the sun to check what i have done..i was disappointed and i have some questions...Those sanding marks need a wet sanding with less aggressive sand paper or they need more compounding with a bigger wool pad that i used??

First off nice job removing the OP.



Yes you will have to do both IMO.



2k and 3K would be best after 1k.



I like using an 7-8" wool pad on such large areas.

Thanks mate! should i go directly with 3000 or to start with 2000/2500 first??
 
First off, it is looking much better.



I would recommend 2K grit sandpaper followed by 2500 grit. Make sure you soak your sheets of sandpaper for 30 minutes before sanding for optimum results. Also, make sure you use a little dish soap or car soap in the water for added lube.



Like Bryan stated, a 7or 8 inch wool pad makes life a lot easier when compounding out sanding scratches. Be very careful not to sand too much near the edges or you will burn through when compounding.



Work in the compound with the wool pad the best you can before going to the PFW pad/SIP combo. Follow it up after with 106FA and 85rd and you should have a flawless finish.

The PFW (6'') is not enough to remove the sanding marks??What wool pad do you recommend me to buy???
 
no i think he means work in the Powergloss and PFW as much as possible. basically the compounding step is the most important and take your time to remove as much defects as possible. personally after the Powergloss and PFW i would prob use SIP and an orange pad or even white pad
 
I have LC pads..6,5''or 6'' Orange green and black and 5'' or 5,5'' yellow orange white and black, and 4'' yellow orange green white and black.

And, although you can, jumping from 1000 to 2500 is rather large.

Sanding in 500 grit incraments will yield flatter results. However, from

1000 > 2000 > 3000 will work. Better still is 1000 > 1500 > 2000 > +.

For future reference. :)

And for heavy cutting, keep a few 100% twisted wool pads and maybe

a few polyester/wool blend pads for lighter compounding.
 
i wet sand it again on the afternoon with 2000grit 3M and i polished it again using

PFW 3,5'' and Menzerne PG

LC 5,5'' YELLOW and RD3,02 + PG

LC 5,5 WHITE and RD3,02

LC 5,5 BLACK and 85 RD

All compos by rotary

is that a repaint/custom paint? i wish i could get the orange peel out of my car, but with factory scion clear?? i doubt i'll make it very far and the car has a lot of orange peel.

Yes it is a repaint/custom paint..It has so much orange peel that you can feel it with your hand...Now about the factory paint i am not sure if there enough clear coat to wet sand it....
