I have been hearing pros and cons about using a power sprayer for detailing, but wanted advice from those with experience. How do you use your power sprayer?

you mean a power washer?

i use mine when the car gets filthy, it gets most of the mud n dirt off without using a mitt, then i go over the car again with a mitt to get the last bits off..and its great under the wheel arches too

always keep a reasonble distance from the paint..say 12-18" and never blast stubbon marks close up as you may loosen the paint

Yes, I mean a power washer. Has anyone done any damage ie can you actually remove the clear coat or blow off the trim. Of course, I mean use the thing from a distance and lower pressure. What was your worse experience with the thing?

the worst ive had is blowing off chunks of clear coat , but thats always been on a beater with clear coat damage or a terrible paint job(NOT on a customers car)

used carefully at a distance you shouldnt have any issues..if the paint is flakey anyway then theres a good chance it will come off, but thats obvious !

ive also seen folk drop the nozzle on the hood...they're fighting against the pressure then when they release the trigger they drop it ...but again, be sensible and you'l be fine

Pressure washers come in all different sizes for different applications but you really don't need a PW that's rated at a gazillion PSI to clean a car no matter how dirty it is.

There is no basis in fact that using a PW to clean your car will damage the paint. However there is plenty of evidence that when used incorrectly and or used on a panel where the paint is suspect already damage can and will occur.

The biggest no-no is using a very narrow tip or fan (like 5 degree's) which sends the water out like pinpoint. That would gouge even concerate.
