Hi guys,

My grandmother had her 2005 Camry in a local body shop to have the front bumper refinished due to a collision with a dog. The car was in the shop for about 4 days in January. Since I only visit her about once a month, her car only gets cleaned about that often. When she got the Camry back from the shop, it had apparently not been washed, and it sat outside (as it always does) for about a month afterward. Prior to the body shop visit, I had thoroughly cleaned the surface, used a clay bar, waxed, and even threw on a coat of Turtle Wax's Wax-As-You-Dry (the surface was glass smooth). The Camry's surface (after washing) now feels like sandpaper, even though it still has a nice shine and beads water. I tried the clay bar and wax again (even some Meguiar's ScratchX), and nothing touched it - same feel.

What the heck happened and how do I fix it? I don't have a rotory buffer, nor am I familiar with polishing. Thanks for any input...

I would imagine there is some overspray. Maybe try a little more aggressive clay, and if that doesnt work, perhaps a light wet sanding will be in order

exactley how long after the repaint did you wash and wax it? new paint should not be waxed right away. i have heard anywhere from 30-90 days

This sandpaper feel is actually not even on the front bumper, where the work was done (and he supposedly took the whole bumper cover off to refinish it). The rough feeling parts are the roof, trunk, doors, fenders, windows - everywhere EXCEPT the lower parts of the car (bottoms of the doors and fenders). I haven't waxed the new paint on the front bumper since I've heard about letting the paint cure for several months before coating it with wax. Thanks for the input...

Sounds to me like overspray and you are going to have to use the more aggressive clay to get it off. What clay are you using now?

If pretty much everything feels rough other than the repainted area, then the body shop (which is typical) did a lousy job taping off the car and got over spray all over it. You are going to have to clay the car to remove it. I'd also let the body shop know you don't appreciate the over spray they left on the car.

I've had it happen...overspray. Let the body shop make it right. Hopefully you are dealing with a reputable shop.

If they said they took the bumper cover off, it sounds like the LIED! I would drive that thing right back to them & make them fix it.

craddmd- Welcome to Autopia!

Sorry to hear about what happened to your mother's car. Yeah, take it back to the shop and discuss it with them. You might oughta get their response and then post back here for advice before you let them "fix" it (scare-quotes intentional, never know what people will try to put over on ya...).
