Portioning/Dilution Rates When Detailing

OT, but how strict are ya`ll when it comes to portioning/dilution rates when it comes to your detailing chems....

I`m somewhere in between. No like my wife who has to ~scrape~ the measuring spoons level with a knife, taps on the spoon to get the stuff to settle, then a few more taps :-) and follows the recipes to a T.

For my APC bottles (various mixes), I do measure and fill them to the diluted ratios I have set via beaker. Some are 32:1, etc, etc.

But when it comes to car washing shampoo`s, I never measure - whether it be soap for the bucket or for the lance.
I keep shampoos in squeeze bottles and squeeze them out. Couple of drops here, maybe one more extra drop there....kinda measuring by eye.
Maybe I`m scared the neighbors will just catch with the measuring cup and next think you know I`ll be out on the interwebs as that guys. They think I`m crazy already with the frequency of washing that goes on ;-)

I have read prior posts where fellow posters have said dilution rates do matter. Go a smigen too much, and performance is not as good as what the printed instructions were on the bottle. Heh, maybe I`m doing it all wrong...

I`m interested in this as well (and also have neighbors commenting on my car washing habits).

I take a similar approach to you. When the chemical ends up in a bottle/sprayer - I measure. Also do this with soap for my foamer (I use old gallon windshield wash bottles and put measuring marks on them). For a two bucket method, I just eyeball some soap into the bucket and start washing

I`m the same. If it goes in a spray bottle I`m accurate, mainly because I want to repeat my success (or not repeat failure). Soap for two Bucket method is the "glug" method. One glug equals one ounce.

i have an awesome measuring apparatus where i can scrap the soap so its exact if necessary... and nothing on the sides.

Thanks to the principles beat into me from a college engineering background, I measure everything precisely. Since we`re usually diluting with water, I use the water to rinse out the spoon or measuring cup, so I get every last drop. Richy, my Duragloss mentor shared a technique I always use when mixing thicker chemicals, such as DG105 or 501 with DG601; Scrap the measuring spoon and use a ruler if decanting into a bottle with no taper.

How about when we measure into a foam lance.
start turning the knob and the scientific dilution ratio just got skewered :P

I always tend to foam lance, and never really use all of 34oz bottle. Sometimes I fill it up to 32 oz. Sometimes 31 oz of water....I also tend to pour the remainder in my wash buckets. It`s never consistent on soap but maybe.....I should test the theory of performance of soaps and dilution ratios. The pouring of the leftover foam lance shampoo doesn`t help the scientific dilution as well.

There were some well respected guys in the thread that said there was a difference in performance not only by using too little product, but also too much soap per volume

I kinda measure my shampoo in the sense that I figure the pump dispenser delivers ~one ounce per pump.I`m a bit more careful mixing IUDJ and just got a Bettix bottle to make that easier/quicker.Other stuff I just do by eye.

pheerix- Yeah, those, uhm..?what`re they called?...Carboys...are a good idea. One of these days I`ll get around to using my 50:1 Glass Cleaner, and for that and QD-strength IUDJ the combo of a Bettix bottle and a carboy oughta make the whole Accurate Dilution thing a lot easier. Thanks for bumping my memory, I have a few empty carboys just sitting around while I try to pour from a regular jug without spilling :o

Though for my version of "large quantities", like my foamgun shampoo mix, I think I`ll stick to multiple one-gallon jugs. Easy enough to fill the foamgun bottles from those and I can keep a few handy in the washbay.

I don`t know if this is bad or not but I dilute my apc and alcohol in spray bottles to 1:4
