Porter Cable questions

I just got my Porter Cable 7424 and plugged it in to check it out. It makes a loud kind of grinding noise in addition to the normal high speed wine. It seems to be working fine but the noise concerns me a little. Is this normal? :nixweiss
 
yup...that's the gear box and a "grinding" noise is normal. It lessens when you have the pad on a surface, but just holding it in the air and turning it on will make you think you've got a defective one.
 
I agree with that. Mine makes the same sound. It hasn't gotten worse or better in the couple hundred hours that I've used the tool so I've sort of gotten used to it. I would wager that its normal for all PCs.

I had to revive this thread from the afterlife because it gave me relief. Like an expectant father, I wanted everything with my PC to be perfect but I had heard the grinding, too. Thank you search button, and thank you veteran PC owners.
