Poor Man's Detailing

My friend asked me to help him detail his car tonight, so I met up with him and helped him wash his car to prepare it to be detailed. Afterward I looked in his limited supply of detailing supplies and found Meguiar's Gold Class and some Eagle One Wet Car Wax/Polish. Since we were using "consumer grade" products I decided to start with the Eagle One and layer on the Gold Class. I know this is hardly like layering Klasse and Blitz, but will the combination of the two products provide a "layering" effect and prolong the protection of his car?

Why would you want to use BOTH of these products? I'm simply curious as to why you would want to mix these products. Most people on the forum, including myself are not very big of doing this. A sealant and then a carnauba coat is one thing but two different waxes on top of each other?

I am also not very big on the Gold Class. I tend to think of it as a huge compromise product. I don't like waxes that are synthetic/carnauba blends. It's longevity is very poor. It tends to slightly change the color of the paint, offers a very candy coat type of shine that is not very appealing in my opinion. It also tends to bend light and thus actually amplifies the appearance of swirls on a car. Very bad! Also, the Gold Class can not be layered. Sad but true. If there's nothing else, then by all means use it.

Don is correct in that Gold Class has cleaners and will deteriorate anything below it. So if you're layering Gold Class over a previous wax/sealant, or layering Gold Class on a previous layer of itself is counterproductive.

I think it is your duty to show your friend the true path, the one to automotive appearance glory and share your techniques and proper supplies with him. Once he sees the results, he will become a believer. There are many others like him in the darkness, it is our destiny to have them join us in the light...

I didn't have any Klasse handy, and I figured that by layering the two products it would increase the time of the protection. So what does Gold Class do to the Eagle One that will make it counter-productive? I just thought the two wax layers would sit on top of each other.

Gold Class has cleaners in it that will remove the Eagle One. No extra protection is added by the layering of these two cleaner waxes. One benefit I see from this is a cleaner paint surface due to the application of two cleaner waxes. I would rather just use a paint cleaner followed up with a coat of quality sealant or wax.

Only non-cleaning true waxes/sealants (Og Blitz, Pinnacle Souveran/PG, Zaino Z-2, Klass SG) have layering abilities in which the previouse layer is not removed by any cleaners.
