Polycharger and DG 601 - Redundant?

What's the best product to use to make my tires black again? I was just noticing how dull they look. I only have 8K+ miles on my car, is it normal for them to turn that ugly brownish color that soon? I tried using some Eagle One tire cleaner stuff the last couple of times I washed my car, it looks ok right after I do it, but the next day they look like crap again.

Any suggestions???

First clean them so they are free of any "sticky", "greasy" residue from the kiddy shiney tire dressings.

When clean, allow them to dry completely.

Then, use any quality PDMS resin tire dressing.

Put on a coat with a sponge and allow to dry.

Then wipe with a dry towel to set the resins.

Then apply another coat and let it dry, wipe again and check the shine.

If you wish more, apply another coat.

What you are doing is filling in the voids that are left in the sidewall by the dealer using the kiddy stuff and it removed the micro waxes from the side wall.

As time progresses, the wax will re-bloom to the surface and the use of a PDMS will not attack and break it down, just attach to it and provide the look you are seeking.

I've read here that 303 Protectant will protect against tire browning. I know exactly what you mean about the color. I've have stopped treating my truck tires because of the browing problem you describe and also because the dressings I have used acted like dust magnets. For my weekend car I've been using Meguiar's Endurance tire gel mainly because it claims to prevent browning.

For my truck I just use a scrub brush and Soft Scrub this leaves the tires clean looking but not shiny and it doesn't attract dirt. Regular powdered Ajax works well too but the Soft Scrub is easier to apply to the tire before scrubbing.

Soft Scrub contains bleach so it can give the tire a dull light gray washed out look. A good tire cleaner works best at removing dirt and grime from the tire. Then follow up with a good dressing like Ron mentioned.

Those kind of cleaners will abrade away not only the micro wax but the carbon black in the sidewall of the tire.

That is why they have the grey look.

What's PDMS? (remember, i'm a newbie:D )

Polydimethalsiloxane, it is the water based type of dressing.

There are many, all are a white/milky color and contain no petroluem distillates, dimethal silicones or hexane.

Our Rubber Protector, 303, AmorAll's newer product, Nu-Finish, etc are these types of dressings.

There is a good technical article you may wish to read on our site.

It was written a few years ago for one of the car care trade journals and is also on Ford Motor's Dealer only site.

Look under Magazine Articles Section on www.autoint.com and you may see the Ford version under the OEM/
TSB Section of Ford Tech Tips.

Good luck and have a great Turkey Day!

for a quicky answer you could use almost any tire-cleaner as they all work about the same to me. (I use diluted Simple Green) I would scrub it with a brush then rinse. Everybody here uses different tire protectants from Meguires, Zaino,

Eagle One, Vinylex and so on, but most stay away from the Turtle Wax (with the exception of some newer long-lasting Gel they have that is supposed to work pretty good.) and the cheaper type products. My opinions: Meguires is too sticky (Endurance) to use and Vinylex too exspensive and does not last long. Have heard Zaino tire stuff is good. I use Eagle One Concourse Tire dressing and it is great!! Gives the tire a deep, blk finish and it last a while. (It's not shiny, but dark blk) If your looking for the "ghetto shine" as they call it here, you can use (I don't like it though) EF Black Opal or 2001 for that look. Anyway, study the main site and you'll get lot's of tire info there, good luck!!

Which ArmorAll product is this? I suppose I could just go look for a newer product that has a milky appearance. Nu-Finish can be used on tires? Does anyone have experience with this?

Short Cut-- I believe many have experienced browning with Meguiar's Endurance. I have some and tested it on a small part of my tire but it has not been long enough for me to post results. A quick search for "endurance browning" should produce good results. What does your version of the product look like?

Do these type of dressings attract dust? My truck is often on construction sites and the the dressings I've used in the past attracted dust so bad it was better to just leave the tires scrubbed clean (about every 4th wash or once a month) than to have them look shiny for a day then dusty for the rest of the week.

It comes in a black plastic bottle and the liquid is a lavender color gel.

Soft Scrub comes in formulas with or without bleach. Personally I haven't experienced greying or discoloration from its use. I also replace my tires every two years. I guess technically this isn't a detailing product as much as a cleaning product. I would like for my tires to look better but not at the expense of attracting dirt. Because I drive on construction sites with lots of dust I have found from trial and error that it's best just to keep the tires clean rather than dressed. I'm curious to know if the new styles of protectant will also attract dust.

I found some 303 Aerospace Protectant recently at my local autoparts store and I've been pleased with the results from using it on my dash. Maybe I'll give that a try on my tires after the next wash.

Small goof by me, I meant Nu=Vinyl by Nu=Finish.

They will not attract dust if you apply like I posted.

Let the dressing dry (water in it evaporate) and then wipe with a dry towel to set the resin.

Very little dust will attract if any.

ive used meguiars endurance for a very long time and im very pleased with it. no browning at all. i think i want a more glossy look though... anyways, gota try out my kinda new bottle of 303 on my tires some day.

I use Eagle One Concours Satin Finish and I don't have a dust problem. It's a PDMS dressing like Ron described.:up :up

My fave tire dressings are:

Pinnacle's rubber protectant

Eagle One Satin Finish aka Concour's tire dressing

Vinylex (just started using this on tires and like it alot)

"Browning" on some tires will be difficult to eliminate completely. Others have mentioned "blooming" which is a waxy substance within the tires that excretes to maintain the rubber's elasticity and blackness. IMHO, it's this waxy substance that amplifies the browning issue. Some tires are gonna have a problem with this more than others. That means some tire brands will need more frequent cleaning than others. Not much you can do about it except stay vigilant.

I as well use the Meguiars Endurance.. However, i bought a seperate bottle of Meguiars Endurance, not the one that comes in the little kit.. This one comes in a clear bottle, and contains a purple gel.. It bring much more gloss.. expecially with 2 coats.. the second one about 15 minutes after the first.. looks spectacular..

i use the endurance....i rotate between the high gloss one...and the gel one....the high gloss is alot easier to get on the tire...its not so thick in appearance and dries faster...only 1 coat needed and really glossy...which one are guys talking about.....BTW...just for the hell of it i used some Ef Hi to get it all off last w/e...and put some 303 on there...man what a huge difference....the 303 was so nice....not as matte as i thought...the trick is...if u want the 303 to shine alittle more...then ut it on heavy kinda....let it sit for a minute or 2...then buff it off with a crappy rag/towel..whatever....just enough so its not sloppy looking...and let me tell you...it shines....you gotta try it if u get the chance....the water just beads off it after a raining....ok,,,rant over...:D

ZAINO Z-16 is the best tire dressing I have ever used. It does not produce a high gloss shine though. 303 is second, vinylex third. None of these cause browning. z-16 will last several washings.
