Polish Choices

Choices Choices, too many Choices.

Hello, I am new. I have been reading over this site for a bit, and value the opinions. You helped me make a few choices to getting started on detailing my car properly. One question I've been having is the choice of polish.

I am going to use clay magic for the claying, but other than that I've been leaning toward the Meg line. Once I get there I have M21 for sealing, but I have been having all sorts of trouble deciding on a polish. I have been looking at #7, M81, or M80.

I think I'm going to be doing everything by hand to start. I have a year old car with dark metallic paint. There are some minor scratches on the front that I wouldn't mind getting rid of but I want a polish I can use anytime.

Thanks for the help. Sorry, if I'm the thousandth noob to ask a question like this.

If you are planning on using polishes by hand, I would try Ultimate Compound and SwirlX. They are both like 10 bucks or less at your local walmart. I wouldn't waste money on another polish if its all being done by hand.

Well, I'll warn you now that hand polishing can really suck.:eek:

For starters, #7 is a glaze, and has no correction or cleaning abilities. It can cover up some marring and add gloss/wetness to the paint. It is something that I feel wroth it to put on the paint after it is polished.

I am pretty sure that 81 is meant for hand polishing, but I have never used it.

I would take the advice above about the Ultimate Compound and SwirlX. They can get some results by hand.

Some tips;

Work a small area at a time. Don't try to rush the job just to get done fast. You wot see much for results. Stick to just trying to correct a single panel in a day and stretch the polishing over more days. Use foam applicators made for polishing. Use even pressure across the pad, not your finger tip(s).

The #81 is similar to #7 (nonabrasive, no real cleaning). The #80 has a little corrective ability and is also user-friendly.

You might also consider their Ultimate Compound (for severe marring) and their Scratch-X v2.0 (for less serious issues). These are made for use by hand.

Oh, and Welcome to Autopia!

thanks for the inputs. I hadn't really considered those options probably because they seemed like those generic products. I'm going to try them.

Yes try them. They are anything but generic :D

I think you will be pleased if you use them correctly.

Best of luck
