please help using Meg's MF pads

Retired Geezer
OK guys next project: I want to reduce the orange peel on my new 14 vette - it's particularly noticeable on the vertical surfaces. I talked to a local detailer and asked him to prescribe a way to do using an orbital and pads rather than rotaries and wet sanding. I have plenty of time to do one fender per day if it takes a long time (retired) I know I can wetsand and use rotaries but am gonna try the least aggressive way first. So he recommended:

meg extra cut disc microfiber pad with menz 400G
then
meg cutting disc with menz 400g
then
regular polishes/black pad like UC and 205 to finish it...

so the question I have is how many passes, tips do you have using these pads?

also, it says run these pads at 4800 rpm - on a GG6, what number speed is that?

the OP is light but noticeable - the reflected image is not clear - here's the front fender

as usual, thanks in advance

With the Meguiar's pads, I would recommend using M105 or M101 or even D300. Neither of these polishes will gum up the fibers as quickly. Make sure to blow or brush the fibers clean after each pass.

As far as correction power, I would stick with speed 4-5 on the Griot's as well, although if the Corvette has the typical Corvette-hard clear coat, then you may need speed six.

???

are you saying that wetsand will be needed first?

will 1000/3000 do it?

Polishing the paint will not remove the orange peel. You will need to wet sand and/or use something like the Car Pro orange peel leveling pads first.

P1500/P2500 would work good. If the paint is very hard you may need to finish with P3000.

well after trying a test panel (behind the rear wheel low on the car) I have found the procedure that works for me. It gets rid of an acceptable amount of the peel - not all gone, but only I can see it in the right light. So here's what I did:
1. sponge wet dry 1200 grit
2. 200/3000 grit wet dry
3. hybrid wool pad with flex 3403 rotary on med speed w/ meg's ultimate compound
4. orbital with orange pad - speed 5- more UC
5. orbital with white or black pad with Meg's 205....

the orbital with the megs MF pads did very little to get rid of the sanding marks, I suppose they would if I kept at it, but the hybrid wool is still the clear cut winner..tomorrow the whole side...stay tuned

I had the following that I tried:
carpro velvet and denim pads
rotary
orbital
foam wool
3 diff foam pads
1000/1500/2000/3000 wet dry grits

Yeah I would love to try it, but I think this will work....

Ron and others...one question - will I have better luck with 105/205 than UC/205? - will it just take longer using the latter? I have 3 bottles of UC, that's why I asked and no 105.....

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut. I'll let ya have the flex to do the job, but when it comes to getting rid of orange peel, I'm scared. Never had the guts to do it to any of my cars, and wouldn't dare try to give advice.

I've had this request a few times and its always hair raising without a gauge. Not doubting your ability but they really don't put much on them anymore. I always suggest Opticoat pro or Finest after in MULTIPLE layers.

.....the corvettes are coming thru with med thickness on a paint gauge ...predominantly I am using the 3000, staying away away from edges and creases and buffing out....relax a bit....

Please guys...keep the warnings to a minimum and just add content here if you can help....I GET IT...and again as per the post above, I am just reducing the OP a bit, not going deep enuf to eliminate it....

not gonna pay a detailer to do opti-pro, but will probably put on OC 2.0 in multi layers when I finish - just got a new syringe full

What's wrong with Menz 400 and 205 to finish?

yeah, I've got about 1/2 bottle of 400......not sure it's enuf for whole car...my polishing on the inside painted parts I've been doing have been coming out about the same way when I did one in 400, and the other in UC as the base polish...

Yes, M105 will remove the defects quicker and will likely produce a better leveling effect of the sanding marks as well (less evidence of straight line texture in the paint).

Kudos on having the nerve and courage to carry out the task. If you would like, I can block some time aside on an upcoming Wednesday or Thursday that I am at the PBMG whare house and can give you some first hand knowledge about wet sanding. Not sure if that would help, but the offer is there. (PS I might need a ride around the block!)
