I need help!!!! I cleaned a vehicle like I always do. I used my regular tire cleaner and some must have gotten onto the Factory rims. Of a Toyota. They were the chrome ones. Two weeks later she came back to me and the chrome is starting to come off. not flaking but smooth . clear coat, chrome, down to the smooth white part. Is this something I did wrong? Or something on the rims? Or never use this on chrome rims? I need some kind of answers to tell my for now customer.

i think the rims wouldve needed to be previously dmaged to start making the wheel peel. only thing ive heard from wheelcleaners is that some corrode alluminum.

Does the surface under the chrome have evidence that the clear has been like this for a while?

Also is it on more than one rim?

In the future please include a REAL subject in the heading- like "tire cleaner ruined chrome wheels" or something like that. It makes it a little easier to reference the subject later on for others with similar problems. We all appreciate it...

As for your question, your cleaner isn't going to do that, unless it was already damaged and you used some really abrasive technique.

The motto here is the "least aggressive method possible", and I can't imagine a wheel cleaner doing that, especially if you did her car just once.

Were you harshly scrubbing? Did you let the chemical sit too long? If not, it definitely wasn't your fault.

For wheels I use the OXO Good Grips Spoke Brush with a cheap car wash soap I won't use on paint, and I've gotten some wheels with bad brake dust looking great. It is just as important to use the proper tools as it is to use the proper product IMO...

Keep in mind that repeat customers is what you want so you gotta keep her happy.

This really ease my mind. This is the only customer that has this problem. I might add that she use to go to another detail shop. And this is the first time she has come to mind and now this happen. I"ve learn to inspect the car\rims closer now. Yes it is on all four rims. What has got me puzzled is the damage areas are smooth even the edges of the chrome and clear coat. Don't remember the name of the cleaner right now. But I will get alot of info about it. Thanks again for the response.
No Scrubbing at all, Just spray on all four then come back thur and wash off.
Think she could be scamming me for anew set of custom rims? Ummm...

P.S. Thanks for the TITLE tip. It make sense

What year Toyota? Is it possible it is still under factory warranty? I knew a guy a couple of years ago that had a Lexus that the wheel coating went bad and they were replaced under warranty. Any opportunity to look at similiar Toyotas and see if perhaps it is happening to other cars also?
