This was definitely a poor choice of material for the roof of a car in Texas, one that isn’t maintained very well especially.

Is piano plastic black all the way through? You can see the protective coating is mostly gone. I’m wondering if I can sand this down with no possibility of hitting a different color plastic underneath??

DaveT436- Better specify exactly what make/model/year, hopefully somebody here will know for sure. Sometimes such surfaces are just an applique with the pigment a very thin top layer covering stuff you don`t want to see...just as you`re fearing. Better safe than sorry ;)
 
2014 Mercedes CLA 250. The real thin top layer is half gone. Immediately underneath is black plastic, just no 100% sure it’s black all the way through. The sad part is when it started it was probably still under warranty. If no one knows I’ll talk to the owner. I’m all set up to do automotive painting now so I can paint it for her. Might be a better option anyway.

Hey Dave, kinda OT but are you a Rupes user?
 
Yes. Right now I have the Mille and the rotary. I sold my 21 Mark II. I’ll be ordering a Mark III 21 in a week or so.
 
I may pick up a 15 Mark III also. I have the battery Flex 15 and a PE 14 with very low use I’m selling. Should have bought the 21 when they were on sale but I have a 300.00 AG gift certificate from last Christmas I need to use lol
