Pet Hair: Customer With Allergies

I have a guy coming in who just bought a Ford 350 truck and he wants me to take care of the interior. Trouble is, the previous owners had a dog who rode in the car with them, and now there is pet hair all over the inside. The current owner is allergic to large amounts of pet hair and is wondering if I can get rid of it for him.

So here’s what I’ve found so far:

Rubber Pet Hair Remover Brush - Autogeek.com

Pumice Stone

Meguiars Odor Eliminator

3D Odor Elminator

Both the Odor Eliminators claim the ability to rid the smell from carpets and upholstery, and the brush or pumice stone ought to take care of the obvious pet hair, but will that be enough to remove the danger of allergic reactions to dog-dandruff, ect.?

If so, which Odor Eliminator is best?

Thanks!

i would shampoo the carpets or at least steam clean them and the seats, that way it helps to sanatize the interior while removing the allergins. i just wouldent trust the odor elimiators on there own.

You might end up having to pull the seats out if you can't get under them very well -- lots of hair likes to hide there.

As for what to use to eliminate allergens, if you don't have access to steam I would suggest stopping by a pet supply store and looking at what options they have available. I believe there are some enzyme-based cleaners available that can neutralize the animal dander, which is usually what triggers allergic reactions.

The key is to be extremely thorough in your cleaning of every surface you can clean. Might also want to address the HVAC vents if possible.

Yep - if you want to kill allergens, the best way is steam. Cleaners are good but will not get rid of dander as effectively. Pull the seats - definitely.

All good advice.

I just did a car with a similar issue, (mine) and a highly allergic customer (my wife)! I started by vacuuming the car, I then removed the seats which was fairly simple but necessary to get under the bottoms and in crevices well. I also removed the door sill plates that revealed a lot of caught hair and debris. Dander was removed my using Woolite Heavy Duty rug cleaner. Spray, agitate, dry vacuum. Repeat.

Elsewhere in the cabin pay particular attention to all the surfaces you can get at. Use a cleaner (I used glass cleaner) on everything you can reach, poke or prod. I also removed the underdash section and pulled rags through the A/C vents. I ran a vent cleaner spray through the whole A/C system, too. I also pulled trim and switches to get debris and dust caught under lips and edges. Remember to change the cabin air filter, too.

My car, which was pretty doggy, has passed inspection with the boss. Phew!
