Pc Vs. Udm

I had a portercablr 7424 and liked it alot. Never had a chance to use the UDM yet. Which one do you think is better? I want to get back into detailing.

Sounds like the Flex is the way to go.

The PC and UDM are very close to the same thing. UDM has more power than the PC but has had recent durability issues. It should be noted however, that the UDM durability problems are VERY promptly and professionally handled by the dealer.

If I were purchasing now, I would look very seriously at a Flex. May get one anyway.

Wow i've never head of the flex. looks like a very good machine but also pretty pricey. I just want something simple that will get the job done.

 get a flex

it will save you from buying a pc or udm and finding out later about how superior the flex is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, just do a search on Flex on Autopia and that will keep you busy for a while. I've posted several write-ups and pics of what it can do, as several others have as well. I was looking for something more powerful and quicker after about my 3rd detail with my PC. Trust me, you'll think it has paid for itself after your first detail with it and you're grinning from ear to ear.

You don't need both. Essentially they are both orbital buffers, the Flex having circular capability. The Flex is kind of like a PC on steroids. The Flex has 6 speeds, as well as adjustable speed trigger. You can always turn the speed down on the Flex.

You don't need both, although when I get a Flex sometime down the road, I'll prolly keep my PC as well.

I'd suggest if you already have a PC, keep it.

I mean...how much can you really get for a used PC?? Plus the PC is more versatile...more backing plates and utilities like carpet bushes and such. And as you mentioned it still can be a backup.

DJ Jonny and I discussed this and we both agreed that we still needed/used our PCs. Beside the carpet brushes and such, the PC is better suited for applications of products like AIOs/Glazes/Waxes and such. The Flex can certainly be used AIOs/Glazes and Waxes...but it can be a little overkill. Plus being able to palm the PC and literally feather it around is a bonus for non-polishing applications.

agreed.....

Since you already have a PC, the Flex is probably a better choice. If didn't have a buffer and were trying to decide between the PC and the UDM, then the UDM is definitely a better choice.

My last detail, I kept the Flex going for FMJ application, as I feel a little more comfortable with it nowadays. If time is not an issue (getting out other machine, pads, etc.), then my preference is to use the PC, as it is much more manueverable as frostydog mentioned. Also, having ability to use 4" spot pads is nice for tight places.

Got a PC already? Knowledge, skill, practice, patience, polish and pad selection makes the PC and UDM about equal. At this point the PC has a much better track record for dependability.

IMHO

Get a rotary and learn to use it and increase your versatility and ability to eliminate blemishes.

Starting out? The Flex appears to be the better choice.

I'd suggest using a PC or UDM with 4 inch pads and a more powerful machine such as the Flex, Ridgid 2611 or rotary with 6.5 inch pads.
