PC heat buildup?

That'll buff right out!
I was applying a sealant this morning with a PC and CMA Orange pad... noticed the pad was breaking up (towards the edge of the backing pad, on the back side), I was running the PC at 5 with, I think, minimal to no pressure. Here's the kicker - temp on the back of the pad measured 198 degrees! Who said a PC doesn't generate heat?

I didn't get a reading of the surface - it was probably only 100, but I was shocked to see the CMA orange pad (and the PC 7424) generate so much heat!)

My analysis is that I'm running the PC way too fast.

Any thoughts? :nixweiss

Never had the PC heat up like that.

Could be that you are using too large of a pad and too much pressure?

Maybe an incorrect backing plate?

Or maybe you have a defective PC?...not sure really but I would look into it.

How would you classify the vibration at setting 5 like? Close to speed 6 or not. For me, there's a big difference between 5 and 6. Perhaps at 6 you might start seeing heat build up but at 5, I wouldn't have thought it could get up that high.

Granted. 198 is hot but probably still significantly lower than what is achieved with an orbital.

I wonder if anyone has data comparing the heat build up of a PC vs Orbital :nixweiss :nixweiss

How old was the orange pad? The pads should hold up pretty long. I've only seen pad disintegrate like that after several uses and several cleanings. Did you use a spur to clean them? If you did, perhaps that why it came apart.

Also, I haven't used the orange pad so perhaps the orange pads are not very durable.
