PC backing plate bolt sheared off in 7424!?

Has anyone had this happen before? I was detailing my father's car with my 7424, and PC backing plate, when all of a sudden, the backing plate flew off leaving the bolt inside the PC. This backing plate says it is rated to 10,000RPM and I was only working at speed 6! I bought mine from Coastal Tool (link here) less than a year ago, and it was supplied with a PC 6 inch backing plate.

Here are some pics. I'm not sure what to do from here...buy an extractor to get the bolt out? Try to get Porter Cable to replace it? Thoughts?

Here are the pics:

Contact Porter Cable and explain exactly what happened (it's a defect in the bolt), don't start cussing or anything, just say you are really displeased! Shouldn't have a problem though.

You might want to contact Mike at Coastal Tool first and do as above, he might have a better/faster solution, he's a real nice guy so please treat him like you would want to be treated .

Thanks for the info...I sent an email to Coastal Tool and Porter Cable explaining the situation with those pictures so we'll see what happens!

Yikes, good thing I threw that BP/PAd in the trash. Luckily the paint wasn't damaged.

Coastal Tool said they will replace it free of charge :)

Have not heard back from Porter Cable yet, though. Gotta get a flexible backing plate for this thing that doesn't fly off! Any suggestions?

The plates sold by Sonus, Excel, Danase etc are about as solid as you can get.. and much better than those PC plates overall.

Response from Porter Cable:

Dear Vincent,

Thank you for contacting Porter-Cable. We are sorry to hear that the backing plate came off of your polisher. Please contact our Parts Department by calling 1-888-848-5175 to obtain replacement parts. Be sure to have the serial number handy for proof of warranty.

Regards,

End User Services

I'm glad they read my email about how my polisher is useless and looked at the pics I attached

Once they fix it, buy a Mcguire's 5 inch backing plate part number #W64. Check the local auto paint stores locally where you live. It has a centering button for aligning pads. It's better than the LC backing plates.

PS. Told you so:goodjob

FWIW, I've never liked the Megs' backing plates for PC use. Not nearly as flexible as the LC plates - doesn't matter much on a rotary, but having a plate that flexes well is a big benefit IMO with the PC.

Just an FYI, the W64 is a rotary BP, the Meg's 5" BP for a PC is W64DA and it does not have a centering button:

Rotary Buffer Backing Plates W64 Product Information

Dual Action Polisher Backing Plates W64DA Product Information

Most users seem to like the LC BP's better than the Meg's, at least for the PC some have reported having problems with the Meg's BP. I've used the 5" Meg's BP for a couple of years w/o any problems, but I also have an extra one from Exceldetail I bought just-in-case.

I have that same plate and have used it 3 years now ...it must be a defect of some sort....I run the crap out of mine and works great ..but your best bet to get it out is drill a small hole in the center and use a easy out...

John, I stand corrected, you are exactly right.

Coastal Tool replaced it today free of charge! Awesome customer service! I ended up going with a 5 inch LC plate from Danase to replace the one from PC.

I scraped my PC backing plate like that just a few weeks ago. Moisture or something caused the hook-n-loop to flare at the outer diameter of the backing plate which was digging and cutting into my pads.
