PC 7424 Quick Question

I just order some 4 inch pads and plate for my PC (not the XP) do I keep the counter weight in place with the smaller pads or should it be removed?

Thanks all.

I left my counterweight in place. I pretty much just use the PC now with 4" pads, and I've not noticed any problems.

To my knowledge there are 5" and 6" counter weights. Use the 5" for smaller pads and the 6" for larger pads. Although I don't feel or see any difference when using different size pads, the manufacture would not make these weights for no reason. If you use the wrong weights it may cause pre-mature bearing wear.

Here's how I look at it: the counterweights are supposed to cover the diff between 5" and 6" backing plates, each with just *one sheet* of sandpaper stuck on. Foam pads, wet with product, weigh quite a bit more than single sheets of sandpaper, and some of the "flexible" backing plates (even the little ones) are a lot heavier than the original PC plates.

A while back some of us weighed various PC backing plates, but I can't remember the specifics

But that's just how *I* look at it :nixweiss As for wear-and-tear, my older PC needed repaired after a few years of use with ~5-6" pads (1st gen. Griot's pads). Since then I've used both my PCs a *LOT* harder, with all sizes of pads (mainly 4" though), with no problems.

Of course I guess somebody who goes by my experiece will promptly kill their PC, you know how that goes ;)

Kind of my thought process as well. i would feel the #5 would be better for the 4 and 5.5' pads, and the #6 for the 6 and 6.5" pads.....
