Painters/Pros - Opinion Please!?

Hi! Have'nt posted in a while...



This is the result of several coats to get a spray job right on the hood of my car;

The area that was being repaired is great (hood leading edge) but it took two attempts, so the clear (and possibly colour) has built up a bit thick further up the hood around the spray jets.



Difficult to tell from the photos but it is actually slightly raised (not a depression) around the spray jet holes. I've lived with it for a few months but the reflection off the 'domed' areas draws your eye and is annoying.



The shop has looked at it but they didn't think anything could be done without going down into the colour???



Is it out of the realm of a wetsand job? I don't want to have more painting done and I don't want to compromise the integrity of the paint in this area.



I've found a local pro who is happy to have a look and tackle it if possible but I have'nt had a chance to get the car to them yet...

If you don't want to compromise the integrity of the paint in that area, then perhaps its best to leave it alone. It would probably bug me as well, so I'd first measure the surrounding paint thickness and then compare it to the high spots on spray jets. If there was less than a quarter mill of a difference, then I'd carefully hit that area with my d/a using a 6" interface pad and 2000 grit paper and follow that up with compounding and polishing. There's still risk involved, but knowing the starting and ending thicknesses helps to minimize the risk and understand where you're at in terms of how much surface has been removed. Your local pro can probably wet sand this area pretty quickly and at least improve its appearance. Hopefiully it can be fully corrected.



If you've never done this kind of work before, then I would not recommend attempting it on something you care about. I actually dry sand most of the cars / trucks I paint. Not only is it faster, but the results can be excellent with the right techniques & products. It literally takes just minutes to dry sand an entire panel and knock down the orange peel. It takes a little longer to polish out (depending on how far you want to take it), but something like a quarter panel usually takes me less than 20 minutes from start to finish in terms of sanding / compounding / polishing / glazing to achieve a high quality production finish.
 
I certainly won't be attempting it myself - I'll let the pro I know look at it (hopefully measure paint thickness) and see how confident he is...



Just wanted to get some opinions from painters/detail pros here as well.
 
Just be prepared to have another spot-in repair done if it doesn't work out. I dunno...I've decided to live with flaws on the hood/etc. of the S8 rather than keep messing around with it and I consider myself to be mighty particular where that car's concerned. Note that if you have to get it reshot you're looking at another cure/outgas period, etc. etc.



I don't think I'd mess with it unless you have a better painter lined up to handle any redo. Heh heh, I have a better painter now who could presumably fix the S8, but nope, I'm gonna live with the flaws ;) At some point it's just a repainted driver and life is short ;)
