Painted Wheels ??

Hi everybody,

Last week I painted my factory pony wheels on my '91 Ford Mustang with Dupli-color Wheel Coating (silver). I then sprayed on 2 coats of clear. The wheels look brand new!

Do I need to wax or polish each wheel so I can protect the finish?

I'm afraid if I use something to harsh the paint will come off the wheels.

I have Klasse AIO and Zaino 2 or 3 and assorted wax products over the counter.

Any help would be appreciated.

First, you should wait until the paint cures, about a month or two. Then use clay, then AIO (gently). I'd protect them with a durable sealant like KSG or Zaino. The reasoning against waxes (the logic of which I'm not completely sold on, but anyhow..) is that waxes soften with heat and let contaminants stick.

I'd use this regimen on the back sides too, so stuff doesn't stick back there. Just finished the third coat of KSG on the back side of Accumulatorette's A8 wheels, which are painted and cleared on the back.

Would you care to expand on the above?

TOGWT- The rationale goes something like this: wheels get hot (due to brakes, etc.) which causes the wax to soften (at a lower temp than would happen with a sealant such as KSG). Contaminants (such as particles from the brakes) then hit this softened LSP and stick in it. Supposedly, products that don't soften at such low temperatures would be less susceptible to such a thing.

Would mother's 'step 2' seal & glaze be of similar product and be use for this as well ?

No, that one is a misnomer. It's actually a glaze, which does not add much, if any protection. It's a beauty product, meant to enhance the wet look of the paint. KSG is a totally different beast. It's an acrylic based sealant.

Ok, then could i apply a coat of this between NXT and carnauba for more shine or depth ?

You can, but some here have commented that Mother's S&G has some cleaners and removed their sealant, so you might want to experiment with that. You could also go with Meguiar's Show Car Glaze (#7) or Hand Polish (#81?) and those would probably not remove the NXT.

Thanks for the response Accumalator

I thought that you may have had a problem with the logic [(the logic of which I'm not completely sold on, but anyhow..)] the differing melting temps of wax (180oF) and polymers (350oF)
