Paint transfer question

Hi. First off, I've been lurking on this site for some time and wanted to say thanks so much to everyone on the board for all the great info that's available here.

Ok, so my issue. I've just recently aquired a pc and have been using it on my blue 350z to try to get some major swirls out of my paint. Everytime I use an abrasive polish I end up with some blue on my pads which I assume is some of the paint. Why would that happen? The car hasn't been repainted and should have plenty of clear coat since I've only used the pc a few times (on different areas of the car). I've used Sonus SFX-1 and 2, OC, and XMT #1 and 2 and all of them have the same result, taking out some of the swirls (but not all) but with blue on the pads when I'm done. From what I've read here and elsewhere this isn't normal when using these types of products. Any ideas on why this would happen or is this normal and I should expect a little paint to end up on the pad?

Is it the Daytona Blue Metallic?

That is weird. Does it do it on every part of the car? There is a fat chance that the dealer could of wrecked it or the car had damage that they had to repair before selling it.

If it is San marino blue pearl it could be a single stage paint which would explain the paint transfer. The other blue is metallic and should have clearcoat as Danase says

Is it possible the car has a single stage paint job?

If it is metallic the metallic is usually in the clear though so you would notice if they painted it without clear.

I didn't realize they had two different blues. You are correct. I used to mix paint when I worked for a boat trailer manufacturer and we did not use clear and most colors where pearl.

Yeah its a blue I have never seen on a Z :) The other blue however is very common. I hope the original poster can post a pic if thats the color he/she is talking about.

I have noticed the east Asian manufacturers in particular always provide two blues for the US market on popular mid trims and higher. One tends to be metallic and the other pearl, one light the other dark in no particular order. Its interesting.

The paint is daytona blue, that's the one that's been around since they started making the 350z and I'm sure everyone here has seen it before. I believe it should have a clearcoat and I'm the only owner so unless the dealer did some shady repaint job when it was new it should still have the clear. The paint does seem to come off of most panels although I do have a number of rock chips so I don't know if the paint is coming off from when I go over those areas with the pc???

Might be a tinted clear - I've seen a few cars that were cleared, had plenty of clear left, and left transfer on the pad during polishing. I had no unusual problems correcting these cars.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I didn't know there were tinted clears. It does seem like I am correcting some of the swirls without problems so I was hoping it would be nothing. Has anyone detailed a daytona blue z and seen this happen?
