paint the hood

Does anybody know, approximately how much good body shops charge to prep and lay down a nice 2 stage white paint onto a bmw M3 sized hood?

How bout Hood and front bumper/spoiler? Cheaper to get them done together?

i would venture to guess $700 for the hood and $450 for the bumper... i'm sure doing both at the same time would help bring down the total price. :nixweiss

Try PM'ing him or sending him email. He's an adjuster as well as a pro detailer. He will have an accurate estimate for you. :xyxthumbs

So, uhh why the interest in repaint costs?? Got any stories/pics for us?

One way to perhaps find which paint shop is good is to see which one uses speis-hecker products..and has had speis-hecker training...

spies-hecker links

There's probably other paint brands that are just as good, only spieshecker is german, and so is your car, so I figure.. hey why not..

I got a redneck shop to paint my bumper on my a6- cost 120 dollars..

and sucked- seems they didn't clean the guns well, so now the clear on my bumper has little glitter sparkles every two inches or so...

plus lame prep- can still see where stone chips were...

If they want too little- worry.

No, no stories; no pics. Im just wondering whether instituting something like a regular 5 year regimen of having the front repainted makes sense on a beloved M3, upgraded to the hilt, which I plan to keep for a long time. I do all I can with tools at my disposal, but after time and miles, all cars are subject to rock chips and things like that. And, if youve kept all the clear coat scratches out of it, then odds are youve removed a fair amount of it, meaning that before long, youre going to need a repaint on the hood, just to give yourself a good canvas on which to begin the next 5 yr adventure in scratch free, chip free paint!

Paul, I had a hood repainted on a previous car....and a rear bumper sprayed as well. The hood ran about 600, slightly smaller than our M's hoods though...and the bumper was about 400. Depends in large part how much old paint will need to be stripped too. I would guess that doing both together can save you a bit of cash. Let me know when and if you consider this...I've used a guy in Mamaroneck who Is VERY fair and does great work. Perhaps I'll do my hood at the same time...cuz sooner or later i will... The chips drive me nuts on black!

Also Numme's in portchester is supposed to do GREAT paint work!

Thanks Chris. Im quite a ways off from doing it at this point. Thats one of the nice things about a white car. It really looks beautiful. In outdoor light, you just dont see them. With indoor light, at angles you can see the chips, but there are only about 3 - 4 on the hood, and I still think there's a bit of improving I can do with the touchup. Still, I like to accumulate the leads, so that when the time comes to do it, Ive got a good selection to choose from. Can you email me the mam'k guys name and number when you get the chance, or location if thats easier than number. Thanks much. And, the Portchester guy; is this a body shop?

I had to have the hood of my Z3 painted. I was hit with a 2x4 across the hood. Only a mild dent and scratch, but messed up the painted job. My insurance covered the repair and paint job.

It was a total of $403.00

Be carefull of who does the work for you. I learned that the hard way. I had to have the hood repainted 3 times. The first time the color did not match. The second time the guy that did the job was careless and allowed dust to settle on the hood while it was wet. The third time I got a perfect job. The guy may not have a job anymore, thats his problem.

I'll email you the info Paul. Steve, the guy in Mam'k is a great guy...I know him pretty well. You can be sure with him you won't be getting the run-around with price...and he does quality work.

Numme's is a body shop in Portchester that I have heard on the boards, does excellent paint work, but you'll pay through the nose... I think your good buddy "Blown" took his turbo Ti there for it's complete respray!

have the hood repainted 3 times

Did the same shop/guy do the job all 3 times? Did they give you flack when you insisted that they redo it? What was their rationale for giving the car back to you in sub standard condition the other 2 times?

The first time I picked up my Z3 it was late in the day. I was eager to get my Z back on the road. It was the next day in good sun light that I realized the paint wasn't right.

I took it back and the owner of the shop was super mad that his mgr allowed my car to be released to me. The second job I didnt see because they realized the goof befor I ever saw it.

The day I picked up my Z,the shop 0wner came out to inspect the car along with me. He was very interested in my being 100% satisfied. Thats the way it should be.

Sounds like you have a good shop there. I had a '95 Volvo 850 turbo in pewter silver before the M3. I had the hood and front fenders repainted on this car. Getting metallics like this color to be indistinguishable is next to impossible. I too picked mine up late in the day, and it looked great. It wasnt til the next day in broad daylight, and only at certain angles, that I noticed it was a tiny shade off. It could have been that the color itself was dead on, but the metal flakes, if not lying in the same direction, or if a slightly different size, were the problem. Its hard to tell. And, it seems, I was about the only person to notice it. Also, although they did a great job in rubbing it out, there were a couple of areas where they look like they had trouble with even spraying of the flakes, because they looked concentrated in one spot, and too spread out in an adjacent spot. Anyway, I said to myself its good enough, and I let it go. But I was pretty unhappy with the shop and Id not use them again. I also noticed a couple of small hairs and dust nibs which they let dry into the clearcoat without fixing!

I now have an Alpine White car, and its quite possible this same shop would have done a great job with this color. White is just so much easier to get repaired than pewter silver which in the volvo line was a medium shade of silver metallic. Before the shop began on my Volvo, they showed me a Maxima with a gorgeous pearlescent coat all over. It really looked nice. But I think the key is to get beyond this first impression kind of viewing, so that you can be more analytical in its appraisal.
