I just got my new Top of the Line newletter and they are featuring this new product. Has NE1 had any good experience with it???



I am planning on taking my show car to our 300zx national convention and am looking for something to put on the front of the car while its on the trailer to protect it from bugs and rock chips.



Does NE1 know if this tape leaves residue and is easy to remove once applied????

As bet993 said, it looks more permanent than temporary.



Ever try to get a enclosed trailor for the 300ZX? I can it it now, a F-150 pulling a fiberglass enclosed trailor with kevlar based bullet proof lining. Gotta protect the 300ZX from small arms fire :) Well maybe not.



What about racers tape? Heard of it on www.carcareonline.com



I think someone on this forum with a really nice black MB (think Afshin?) in CA did something like this with blue tape?
 
Nothing you would want on you're 300ZX because this 3M film is semi permanent to, just like the stuff posted from TOL. Its a film you want on for a long duration, nothing for a long road trip, unless the road trip lasts for a few years and well, takes you 15K to get to the competition.
 
Might be a new product line from BodyGuard and not yet listed on their website: http://www.bodyguardonline.net/

6" x 12 ft size isn't listed either and I would suspect it would be comparable to 3M's paint protection film, if it's the permanent type.

I think I might just go with some Blue Painters tape. I did a search on the forum and Brad had good results from it. The car will be trailered and I am just trying to cut down on stuff getting thrown up from the tow vehicle.
 
Don't waste your time with the blue painter's tape - it's so thin it won't protect against anything.



I've used bulk rolls of the 3M Scotchcal paint protection film for almost 10 years. Part # 84804 is my favorite - 4" wide, 8 mils thick and 30 yards (I think) long.



Apply, and it removes residue free in seconds. Stays on even in the rain.



e-mail me if you want more info. I've recently had Xpel kits put on my cars, but still keep the film for emergency use and for the hot rods.

I'm surprised you had poor results with the blue painters tape. I used this a couple of months for a 700 mile trip (high speeds on CA highways) and it protected my paint perfectly.



The major drawback to the painters tape is it looks awful and makes your car standout, but on a trailer that's not a big concern. Is the 3M Scotchcal clear? Can I apply it to painted plastic surfaces as well? Would be nice to have an alternative to the blue tape.
 
This might be something you guys have forgoten about? When I tow using my Expedition I use a mud and stone guard which spans the entire length ot my truck. i purchase it fro the Whitney's catalog. Good luck!!

MBZ 500E - the film is clear. It's the same stuff they make the x-pel kits out of, just in bulk rolls.



Every time I've tried blue tape, it refuses to adhere to the paint, falling off at speed. Any idea what happens when it gets wet? And, it's so thin I can't see where it could possibly protect from rocks (bugs yes, rocks no).



You can apply Scotchcal film to anything - glass, paint, plastic surfaces, etc. It's money well spent to me.



RichPug - a car cover will flap at speed, possibly marring the paint or come off. They're made for stationary use, not on a trailer.

No doubt the blue tape doesn't adhere well, I've found adding a second strip in areas you'd expect it to come loose really helps. Honestly I did not get any rock chips during this trip, maybe I was lucky none popped up but I can't imagine 700miles on CA roads that this was the case. You're also right about the rain, living in SoCal I tend to forget these things:D :o



So does this 3M tape remove easily or is it something you put on the car and leave it on all the time? I know in MBCA Concours events this semi-permanent tape could take some points off the overall score. If indeed it removes easily then it sounds exactly like what Pat and I are looking for.:bow
 
You don't mention what type of trailer you will be using, but assuming it's some sort of flat bed trailer (not a car dolly), couldn't you just put up a plywood barrier around the front perimeter of the trailer? That would keep anything from coming in contact with your vehicle.

MBZ - I've peeled the 3M tape off probably 200 times, and the only time it ever left a residue was on the leading hood trim on our '59 Sedan Delivery (stainless trim). It always comes off the paint cleanly. Stuff's amazing. Even stays on at 168 mph (don't ask how I know).



Rolls of it are rather expensive, but worth it to me.
