Paint going back to crappy shape fast

Black 1988 Truck (mine). Paint was in horrible shape, tons of tiny scratches or cracks that just marred the finish. After a lot of work with many products and a PC (ssr 2, HT light and medium cut, PWC, EX, Nattys), the paint looked nice. Not perfect but most of the scratches were gone. After first wash it was fine, second wash (two weeks) it looks like the scratches or cracks are back almost to where it was before. Car has been repainted (clear coat) and I didn't notice any place where it was down to base coat.

Not sure what went wrong. One of my other cars that I did that had etching looks fine. I've seen paint go back when it was badly oxidized but this wasn't oxidized, just scratched to hell. One thought I had was the paint is just shot and micro cracking but that is just a guess.

sounds like the surface prep you did removed some of the minor scratches & marring while filling-in some of the more significant scratches.

I've used the SSR's with great success & found that they have very little or no fillers, I have no experience with the Hi-Temp polishes you listed so I can't comment. Think of fillers as make-up .... very temporary.

I'm pretty sure I read a DC thread about the presence of fillers in PwC but I can't find it & don't remember which direction the discussion took. You may want to search for it in the Poorboy's forum or email Steve directly.

Perhaps someone with experience using Hi-Temp products will comment.

Were you using the two bucket method and a QUALITY was pad/mit when you washed the truck? Improper washing could have been the cause. Everytime a family member of mine washes their own car, all my hard work gets destroyed. If you're confident in your wash method, then I would go with the fillers theory.

By these statements, I would agree your paint is shot....you did a temporary fix but with cracking and lots of tiny scratches there was no way it was going to be repaired. We used to have a 88 Toronado with the exact same description you posted and the results were exactly the same a couple weeks later..sorry to say you have a paint job needing replacement:(

I'll do it again this weekend and try to get some pics too. I'm confident about the wash not being the problem. Not so confident about the HT not having some fillers. If I wipe the hood down with ISA that should strip off anything on there then I can start over sticking with the SSR line then EXP, Natty's. I have all the SSR's now which I didn't when I did truck first time.
